How to change font & size of (all) citation numbers?

I have Word 16 & use a recent Macbook.

I want to re-format the endnote citation numbers that appear in the body of a document (say at the end of a sentence).

I know how to re-format them from (say) 1 2 3 to i ii iii. But I need to format the font and size of every such number in the doc. All at once. This is because they presently appear in different fonts & sizes almost every time I insert an endnote. A way to prevent that in future would be much appreciated also.

The actual endnotes (bottom of the doc) are much easier to format - you just apply a style to the lot. But even here maybe 1 endnote in 30 will be dramatically smaller than the style I specify - especially the citation number that begins it. How to fix this too, please?

Thanks to all.

Hi John,

Before all, please make sure you are using the latest version of Word for mac 2016(16.16.17). Many issues have been fixed with update of version. You can open Word, go to Help > Check for update.

If you are in the latest version, On the Insert menu, click Footnote to open the Footnote and Endnote box. In the Footnote and Endnote box, select the options you want. Choose where you want to apply the changes—the whole document or the section you’re in—and then click Insert.

Thanks Emmy Lou.

That link says: "Press CTRL+SHIFT+s to display the Apply Styles dialog and in the Style Name: control, type Endnote Text, which will cause the Modify button to become enabled."

But pressing CTRL+SHIFT+s produces nothing, I'm afraid.

I have the latest version of Word.

Thanks HappyBoy3.

I updated - that was a good tip.

However my problem is not changing font from the options in the dropdown (1 2 3 to i ii iii, etc) - I can do that - but in making all the endnote reference numbers in the text of my doc the same font and size.

Presently they're every font & size imaginable - I don't know why.

Hi John,

CTRL+SHIFT+s only apply to Windows version of Word but not Mac.

After searching in our community, this case may help you.

Poster said he can format endnotes by going to FORMAT, then STYLE and superscript will causes size reduce by default.

Thanks - a logical comment.

However when I go to FORMAT then STYLE, then select ENDNOTE REFERENCE, & adjust the font size, the new size is applied to the whole line of text (not just the reference number).

Nor does the change stick when I revisit FORMAT then STYLE.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

Hi John,

I have tested by my side, as you said, it change whole line of text.

Unfortunately, I didn't find the option to control reference number only in endnotes.

Other members in our community will also share their insight if they have any possible solution.

Additionally, You can post your requirement to Word UseVoice.

Thanks Emmie Lou.

I'm afraid this one lost me. That link says:

"To access these settings, go to the Edit menu (“EndNote” menu on Mac)..."

But there is no EndNote menu in Word for Mac. (And the Edit menu does not have Preferences.)

Thanks again...

Thanks again HappyBoy3.

I posted the query to the site you linked - see what happens.

I'm not sure why everyone who uses endnotes isn't experiencing this problem, tho apparently they're not.
