How much does Sharepoint storage cost? Looking for an official answer.

Hi

Looking for this for my shop, and I expected that there is a straight forward answer for this. Instead, every time I ask "How much does Sharepoint storage cost" I get the $0.2/GB/month number from various non-MS affiliated blog posts or community forums.

I can't be the only one who thinks that's not ok. And with my shop getting ready to upload 10s of TBs, I can't tell you how important this is for me to get right.

Is there a pricing page that mentions this cost? The closest I can find is Sharepoint Plans (Compare SharePoint Plans and pricing | Microsoft 365) which, unless I'm missing something, doesn't.

Please note that in my scenario, we're NOT interested in OneDrive storage. Just Sharepoint.

Many thanks and regards

Jim (Dimitrios) Andrakakis

Hi Jim,

Thanks for posting in the community. We are happy to help you.

This depends on the plan type and the number of plans you have purchased. Please allow me to explain.

For most plans, each license adds 10 GB quota for total tenant storage (SharePoint only).

For your reference:

SharePoint limits by plan

Let's assume that you have purchased 10 "SharePoint Plan 1" and have assigned them to users. In this case, your organization has increased 10 x 10 GB =100 GB of space at a cost of $50/month. Therefore, your cost is $50/100 = $0.5/GB/month. Also, your current total tenant storage (SharePoint only) should be 1 TB + 100 GB = 1124 GB (1.0976 TB). Note that The 1 TB is the default tenant quota, not the plan quota.

Additionally, here is the situation in my test tenant. I have 20 "E5 plan" and 2 "E3 plan". Therefore, my total tenant storage (SharePoint) is 1 TB + 22 x 10 GB = 1244 GB. I have run the Self-help diagnostic for "SharePoint Tenant Storage" and the calculation is correct.

Based on the situation, regarding your question, if you purchase SharePoint Plan 1 only, the cost is $0.5/GB/month, but if you purchase other subscriptions/plans which including the SharePoint license, such as "Microsoft 365 E5", then the cost will change.

Also, if you purchase another plan "the Office 365 Extra File Storage add-on" to add more storage, then the cost will change.

We look forward to your response. Thanks for your cooperation.

Hi George

Many thanks for your quick and thoughtful reply. It wasn't what I was looking for :-) but that's on me for not clarifying.

What you've just explained is the "free" storage we get with our plans and licenses. In your scenario, the test tenant, that's 1 TB + 22 x 10 GB = 1244 GB.

The obvious next step is, what happens when we need more than that, say 20TB? This is somehow answered in the page you mentioned, Add more SharePoint storage to your subscription. But even there there's no cost written.

For other MS services, for example everything in Azure, the cost is clearly documented. See here how nicely it's explained for Azure Service Bus! Using this information I can calculate the cost for my scenario or simulate a number of scenarios before I even open the Azure Portal.

And here we come to my actual question, or maybe call it request: the extra cost for Sharepoint sites is very poorly, or should I say almost not at all, documented. I need this info to support my work (POCs, yearly reviews, projections etc etc) which of course always includes a cost assessment. Right now I don't have any supporting documentation other than blog posts. Per the instructions in the "Add more SharePoint storage to your subscription" page, I would have to try it out to see the cost, or maybe call our account manager, which obviously slows things down massively.

So my request is: we Sharepoint users, especially corporate ones, need a piece of documentation, comparable to the ones for Azure or other services, that explains the cost of extra storage upfront and clearly.

Many thanks and regards

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for posting back.

No, I think you may have misunderstood my meaning. It is not the "free" storage, but the actual tenant storage space (SharePoint) added by the plan. For "what happens when we need more than that, say 20TB?", then you need to purchase at least 2048 plans (20x1024/10).

For the Office 365 Extra File Storage add-on mentioned in the "Add more SharePoint storage" article, it costs $0.2/GB/month. Only the tenant admin can purchase and see its price in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Additionally, this service/plan applies when a tenant runs out of SharePoint storage. Generally, the tenant admin will need to purchase relevant subscriptions that include the SharePoint plan, not just this storage add-on. I've added the article just to let you know that SharePoint storage space is also affected by additional factors.

Regarding your request, unlike the Azure services, there is no official article for SharePoint storage cost. Please allow me to explain. This article only mentions the storage space increase rules, i.e. 10 GB per relevant license, but makes no mention of the cost. This is because SharePoint services can be provided by separate plans or by a subscription that includes multiple services and SharePoint plans, such as Microsoft 365 E5, i.e. their prices are different. As I mentioned in my first reply, if you only buy SharePoint Plan 1, then the cost is easy to calculate. However, in reality, customers are likely to buy differently priced subscriptions that include different services, and if you calculate the cost of SharePoint space directly in terms of the price of the subscription, then the cost will obviously be higher and variable. As different types of subscriptions and quantities are selected, there are thousands of possible combinations, and the corresponding SharePoint storage costs will vary. This situation is due to the way Microsoft has designed subscriptions.

Based on the above, while there is no official article to provide you with a direct answer, you can still calculate SharePoint storage costs based on the number of subscriptions with the SharePoint plan and the number of “Office 365 Extra File Storage” add-ons.

Appreciate your understanding and patience.

Hi George

Many thanks for your patience and clarity :-) We're getting there.

Reg. the "free" space: bad wording on my part but we're talking about the same thing: the space you get with the plan and number of users.

Otherwise I think you understand my problem. It's not (strictly speaking) technical. It's that, when giving any figures to my higher ups, I need to cite official sources. Otherwise the first question will be "where did you find this cost?" and if my answer is "in a community forum" (even if given by an MS employee) then I'll get a lot of angry stares of disbelief.

That's why I kindly request for an official page with costs. It will be a long list, that's clear, and it doesn't have to be a "calculator". But then I will have what I need to do my model or sim or whatever.

Is there somewhere where I can file such a request?

Many thanks and regards

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for posting back.

I understand your concerns. The sources cited in the report need to be official documents. I have searched a lot and indeed I have not found an official document or an official calculation tool that directly shows SharePoint storage cost. The only thing I found related to it was the document in my first post.

In this case, I suggest you report the situation to your tenant admin or IT team and ask them to raise a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center> Support> Help & support. That support team there will have the correct channel and resources to help you investigate more and see if they can find any official documents I may have missed.

In addition, you can post your request in our Microsoft Feedback Portal where other members also post and vote for their requests. The higher the number of votes, the more likely the development team will add the feature to the product. It's the platform for Microsoft to hear your voice and improve our products.

Sorry for the inconvenience that happened to you. Appreciate your understanding and patience.

Sincerely,
