How does it make any sense that Microsoft 365 Family with Copilot doesn't actually allow you to use Copilot unless you are the primary account holder?

I must be missing something here because why would I pay an upgraded cost for a FAMILY plan when the family can't use any of the new functionality? This statement implies that the Copilot features won't work on the family members accounts: "Note: AI benefits are only available to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with additional Microsoft 365 Family members. " It sounds like the only plan that should have been cost increased is the personal plan.

Answer

Dear Brent Feinberg,

Thank you for sharing your frustration regarding Microsoft 365 Family with Copilot and its limitations for additional family members. I understand how this restriction can feel counterintuitive when you’re paying for a family plan. Let me provide some context and potential suggestions:

Why Copilot Is Limited to the Primary Account Holder

1. AI Resource Allocation

• Copilot’s AI features use significant cloud computing resources. Limiting access to the primary account helps manage resource demands while maintaining performance and cost efficiency.

2. Subscription Differentiation

• Microsoft likely designed this limitation to differentiate between the Family and Personal plans, making the Personal plan with Copilot a direct value proposition for single users.

3. Privacy and Security

• Since Copilot processes and generates content using user data, restricting its access to the primary account may also align with privacy and compliance concerns.

Your Options

1. Feedback to Microsoft

• Share your feedback directly with Microsoft. Use the Help > Feedback option in Microsoft 365 apps or visit the Microsoft Feedback Hub to express your concerns about the value of the Family plan with Copilot limitations.

2. Consider Plan Alternatives

• If Copilot features are essential for all family members, it may be more cost-effective to use individual Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptions for those who need these AI features.

3. Maximize Family Benefits

• While Copilot is exclusive to the primary account, other features (e.g., shared storage, Office apps, and family safety tools) remain accessible to family members. Ensure family members take full advantage of these benefits.

Suggestions for Microsoft

It may be worth suggesting to Microsoft that they:

• Provide an add-on option for family members to access Copilot features at a reduced cost.

• Offer clarity about these limitations upfront to avoid misunderstandings during purchase.

I hope this explanation sheds light on the situation. If you have additional concerns or questions, feel free to reach out.

Best regards,

Yuki
