how do I type an exponent into a word document?

I am typing a word document with an equation in it and I need to put an exponent into the equation. How do I do this?
Answer
Answer
The easiest way would be to superscript a number. Select the number and press Ctrl+Shift+= (Ctrl and Shift and  all together) or right click and select Font to initiate the Font dialog where you can assign Superscript.

You can also use Alt+0178 for ² (squared) and Alt+0179 for ³ (cubed). Those numbers must be tapped out on the numpad while holding the Alt key down.

The Insert, Symbol command gives you access to a wide variety of superscripts.

You haven't mentioned a version of Word you are using so I will defer from mentioning the Equation Editor.

If you're using the equation editor / equation tool in Word, exponents are on the equation palette.

If you're creating the equation yourself, you can use superscript - select the exponent and press Ctrl+Shift+= to convert it to superscript.
