How do I recover my Office key?

I have a surface pro that I have had for a few years. Last year my daughter used it for school. When I signed her out of MS Office, it now say it is unlicensed, I had purchased Office when I originally got the surface pro. There is no license stickers on the outside. It had worked fine for years till she had to add her account and the tools for the Public School account, not that I removed her, it appears to have changed something and Office no loner is activated.

How do I recover what was already purchased?

Hi Mhab11

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this.

When you originally purchased and activated Office, that licence should have become associated to your Microsoft Account online and it is form there that you can re-install Office without the need for a product key.

Log into this page: https://account.microsoft.com/services/

On that page, do you see your Microsoft Office licence listed?

If you do:

Use this tool from Microsoft to remove all remnants of any previous Office Installation:

https://aka.ms/SaRA-officeUninstallFromPC

Restart (not shut down) your PC

Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/ and re-install Office from there

Hi Mhab11

Is that a private Office licence, or provided by work or did you purchase that Office licence on the HUP (Home Use Program)?

It is not an enterprise key, it was purchased for this laptop only.

Hi Mhab11,

An Office licence these days is not tied to a device, it is tied to a Microsoft Account, are you sure you are logging into that web page with the exact same Microsoft Account you used to purchase the Office licence?

I did not purchase, the purchasing department did. I set it up when it came and office had been working fine until my daughter used for school. It appeared the system wanted to default to her account. When I signed her out, the problem started. If I sign her in it goes away, but she only used this laptop the first time 12 months ago, I got in 2017 and I was the only one on it. I only have my hotmail account that would be a "microsoft" account.

Hi Mhab11

You mention the 'Purchasing Department' installed Office, therefore, that licence is most likely associated to a work account, not your personal Microsoft Account. You would need to contact the IT department to find out what account that licence is associated to.

No they made the purchase, it was installed when I received and open the original packaging. I set the system up, but at the part where it says do you want to add an email, I opted for local account.

Right now I am reinstalling office to see if that fixes the problem.

Okay I have it working again. I really hate MS, it is free with my gmail account, why not make it link to my hotmail too.
