How do I locate the GA or admin user for a tennant if the information is unknown.

A client of ours has recently taken over a business and they have been given access to the office 365 mail box but this user does not have GA rights.  How do they go about locating the account or partner with permissions so they can start making changes e.g. change their password and order more mailboxes etc.

Hi Burnley357,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft community.

Regarding your concern, as far as I know, usually the person who gives you the user account and password is a Microsoft 365 tenant admin. You may contact that person or your IT admin for further assistance.

If you know the password for the current mailbox and you simply want to change the password, you might skip the help of an admin. To do so, go to outlook.office.com and enter your current account. Click the avatar on the top right corner and go to View account > Password > change password to change password by yourself.

And, if the organization has enabled Self Service Password Reset (SSPR) for users, users may even reset password in case they have forgotten the password. For your reference: Reset passwords - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Docs

Hope it helps.

Thanks & Stay safe,

Qian

Hi Burnley357,

But if there's no chance to find the Global admin after all efforts, please click here.

Thanks,

Qian

Yeah that does not help in this case sorry. The client has been given the email address and a password.

It has no admin privileges I've confirmed that and this is all the former owners have given them. Its a single mail box and there is no IT department, so it becomes a circular chicken and egg problem.

I'll get them to call MS support tomorrow and see if they can find a solution.

Hi Burnley357,

Hope everything goes well with you.

Regarding your concern, may I know if there is any update? Thank you!

Besides, as long as that client could reach a former global admin, he/she could ask that admin to manage the role of his/her user account in Microsoft 365 admin center (portal.office.com) > Users > Active users > under Account, Roles, click Manage roles. Thus, that client will have the admin permission of that Office 365 tenant and manage the whole tenant if he/she's been assigned the role of Global Administrator.

Sincerely,

Qian
