How come I can’t open anything from OneDrive in Microsoft 365 on iPhone?

When I’m in a document in OneDrive and try and open it in 365, I get a pop-up that says “Can’t open file.”

Dear EricSilberstein,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

We understand that you are unable to open files from OneDrive through your iPhone.

To further help you identify the cause of the issue, please share more information with us:

1. Did you find the file through the OneDrive program on your iPhone and select the Microsoft 365 program to open it? Or do you open your file information directly from Microsoft 365 program?

2. When you can't open a file, are you unable to open all file types? Or some files cannot be opened? What file type are you unable to open, Word? Excel or other?

3. Did you create the file yourself? Or did someone else share it with you or send it to you to save in OneDrive?

4. Do you have information about opening or viewing your files in other programs? Have you tried to confirm the file information on the OneDrive web site or system?

5. You said that the error message "Can't open the file" is displayed, you can also share the screenshot of the actual error message when you open the file with us.

Before you reply, in order to check the information of your OneDrive files and programs, you can try the following actions to see if your problem can be solved:

1. Login to OneDrive web end to check the file information:

You can log in to OneDrive web terminal: https://onedrive.live.com/ to see if there is any information about your file in the web terminal, and open the file through OneDrive web terminal to see if you can open it.

2. Open the file on other devices:

In order to check the program information of OneDrive on your iPhone, you can try to open OneDrive files on your Windows or Mac system to see if your files can be opened normally or if it still shows the error.

3. Reset OneDrive program on iPhone:

Please make sure your files in OneDrive have been backed up and saved completely before operation to avoid file loss.

You can refer to the detailed operation in the following link to reset your OneDrive:

Reset OneDrive - Microsoft Support

You can try the operation to see if it can help troubleshoot the corresponding OneDrive file information, and you can always get back to us if you have any updates or questions.

We look forward to your response.

Best Regards,

1. I accessed the file through the OneDrive program on my iPhone and selected the Microsoft 365 program to open it.

2. I’m trying to open Word. PDF file seems fine.

3. I created the files.

4. It seems to have a problem when opening from OneDrive in 365 only from the app. When I try opening OneDrive from the browser it keeps trying to open the OneDrive app, continuously. Not sure what that’s all about. However, everything was fine when opened it up from https://onedrive.live.com/.

5. It says "Can't open file. Sorry, something went wrong" with name of file.

When I get a chance I will reset the OneDrive app and 365 app on my iPhone.

Not sure why this started happening. It was working fine before.

Any word on how to fix this? Seems other people are having trouble as well.

365 is also having trouble opening mp3 files as well.

The only reason I downloaded the app is so I can make changes to files on my iPhone instead of working on my laptop.

Dear EricSilberstein,

Thank you for your reply.

We see that you have indicated that opening a Microsoft 365 program through the OneDrive program opens the file, but opening the OneDrive file without opening it directly through the Microsoft 365 program displays an error.

You indicated that you have reset both the OneDrive and Microsoft 365 programs and it still doesn't work, and we have retested but it shows that the files can be opened normally.

The concern is due to compatibility information between your Microsoft 365 program and your OneDrive program, and the recent OneDrive data migration does affect some users from opening or accessing file information.

We have also recently received feedback from other community submissions about this issue, and we believe that this is a temporary issue that may have been caused by the OneDrive server update data migration process that affected OneDrive functionality for some users.

We have noted this issue and have provided feedback through internal channels, and the developers have added the issue to their list of issues and have begun to urgently fix the issue.

In the meantime, to help you confirm this further, you can also share your iPhone and Microsoft 365 version with us and we'll troubleshoot further through your version as well.

You said it was working fine before, but suddenly it doesn't work, you are worried that the problem is due to the impact of OneDrive migration, this issue will affect some users, you can try to add an alias or create a new Microsoft account to help troubleshoot the account information:.

You can try adding an alias to your Microsoft account and then logging in to OneDrive using the alias and confirming the synchronization information accordingly:

Please be assured that adding an alias will only add an additional login method, your account will not be affected in any way and you will still be able to log in with your original email address afterwards.

Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com - Microsoft Support

We also recommend that you provide feedback via our feedback link to help the development team gather further information to fix the issue.

Since OneDrive has a dedicated development team, you can send an email to the OneDrive support team to submit your suggestion and the OneDrive team will review it:

I’m not sure the link you provided to the OneDrive team is correct,

No files are lost.

I can open files in OneDrive. I can also open those same files in Microsoft 365, except mp3 files for some reason.

The only thing I can’t do is when the file is open in OneDrive and I attempt to open in 365, I can’t.

Keep in mind when I’m working in the file in 365 and I’m done, the same file in OneDrive updates correctly.

I may just leave it. All I know is it was working before.

Dear EricSilberstein,

Thank you for your reply.

We see that you have indicated that you will be sending an email to the OneDrive team for support via the link you provided, so it's okay for you to continue to do so.

If you add an alias to your account, you will still not be able to open OneDrive files from Microsoft 365, but updates and syncs will still be available.

The link we sent you is correct, there is a message at the end to send an email to the OneDrive team, after you click on it, you may be required to sign in to the OneDrive web site, and then you will be contacted by the appropriate team member after the email is sent.

While you are in contact with the OneDrive team, we also recommend that you open the file directly through OneDrive and select Microsoft 365 Open to help you view and modify the file information.

If you have already sent an email to contact the OneDrive team, we recommend that you wait for an email response from the OneDrive team.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
