Assuming your software is fully updated there are 2 different word count features. What you're referring to is called 'Live Word Count' which you can toggle on/off through Word> Preferences> View. Having it constantly updating can have a detrimental effect
on other performance aspects, though. Unless it's an absolute necessity I'd suggest you use the Word Count command from the Tools menu on an as needed basis, instead. It also provides more detailed information than Live Word Count. You can also go to Word>
Preferences> Spelling & Grammar in order to put a check in the Readability Statistics check box which will include a word count automatically at the end of each spell-checking session.
