Getting hold of an onmicrosoft domain once set up for a trial?

So. Someone here set up a trial for O365 business, using companyname.onmicrosoft.com. That trial expired and when I called MS support, they said that that domain is no longer available. I cannot register a new account under that name though, so it appears to be taken. Is there any way to reuse it? We are are partner and need to set it up and then register our partner licenses.

or is companyname.onmicrosoft.com lost forever?

Hi Anders,

Yes, it can still be used within a certain period.

Generally, a trial account will have a 30-day grace period when it’s expired. Then your data will be deleted no later than 180 days. After that the onmicrosoft domain will be released from the system.

Regarding the situation, if it’s already more than 180 days, the domain should have been used by someone else already.

It is more than 180 days. It was created under the beta period, but how can the domain be taken if MS support says there is no such domain?

There are chances that it will be taken. I don't think Microsoft support will tell you who had taken it, as they need to protect their customers privacy. If you still able to login, you better secure it before you past that grace period

Can someone suggest with whom at microsoft we should discuss this as I'd rather not post sensitive info here?

Hi Anders,

I’d like to collect your previous trial account to check whether it’s already been taken.

I have sent you a private message to collect the information, you can access it via the link below:

I am having this same problem, although we are not sure how long it has been since the trial expired. Who can we contact to have this domain made available again?

Hi Anders,

After checking the tenant account your provided, it’s already been taken by someone else. So please select another tenant name for your business.

@Amos,

I assume that you have already tried to register the same tenant name as your previous trial account, and find it’s not available.

For the scenario, please try to login to Office 365 with your previous admin account.
Once logged in, you can still add new licenses to this tenant account, and don’t need to register a new one.

If you can’t login with your previous account (correct credentials), the tenant should have been taken.

What you say is contrary what Microsoft support said when we called them. They said that it was NOT taken. Since then however, I have learned that this is quite a common problem and the resolution is to simply use another name, which is what we did.
