Excel suddenly using only 1 core

Good morning,

About a week ago, my excel suddenly only uses 1 core or thread for everything.  No formulas or calculations will ever use more then 1 core and its really odd.  it has worked perfectly prior to this, using all cores rather often.

Using Office 365, whatever the current version is.  Intel 9980xe, 18 core, 36 thread, 32gb memory.

Nothing I have tried seems to correct this:

I have checked the multi thread options and its set to use all 36.

I have tried changing to 1, closing, reopening, changing back to 36.

I have tried repairing office.

I have not uninstalled or reinstalled yet, I have outlook customized and was trying to avoid this if at all possible.

Do you have suggestions or fixes for this?

Hi Keith,

We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused by the problem.

From the description provided, when we looked at our end in the Options of Excel applications, Excel is using all processors on the computer by default. As you mentioned you have changed to 1 thread and re-opening the Excel application change it back to 36 thread, we guess you had selected the option Manual. If so, can you please select the option Use all processors on this computer and check the performance.

Open Excel application> File> Options> Advanced> Scroll down to Formulas> Enable Use all processors on this computer instead of Manual> OK

During my search, I found a related thread you can give a glance to it.

Lastly, we would like to you provide the detail description about the problem along with screenshot of Office account page for better understanding the situation. To provide the screenshot of complete Office Account page: Open any Office application> Account. (Note: Please mask the email address and tenant name to protect your privacy)

Appreciate your understanding.

Regards,
Chitrahaas

Thanks for the quick reply!

It is currently set to use all processors, I had tried 1 and 36 and went back to all.

Maybe just a general followup question, I opened one of books that I know stresses everything and it runs on all 36, (that is just an ugly minif formula on 211k lines).  The ones I seem to having issues with are much smaller but are in tables, are tables and formulas not multi threaded?

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Keith,

Multi-Threaded in Excel application is for the formula’s that speeds up the calculation, you can refer to this article (even though article is old, but there is complete description about Multi-Threaded). As you’re having the problem with processing, in this case it’s better to provide the feedback to related developing team via Excel application.

Open the Excel application> Feedback> I Don’t Like Something> Provide the complete description> Submit.

Appreciate your patience and understanding.

Chitrahaas
