Excel Links Breaking in PowerPoint

We have a PowerPoint presentation in O365 Teams, with an accompanying Excel workbook, located in the same O365 Team. The links will not update and we have to re-link each link every week (paste special>paste link>excel spreadsheet). The error is "We can't connect to 'https//xxxx.sharepoint.com/sites/xxxTeamA/Shared Documents/General/Weekly Update call/???. Please make sure you're using the correct web address.' Users of the file are on PowerPoint version 1906 (Build 11727.20244). In an effort to remedy this - we have tried: shortening the file path by moving the documents to a more flattened location, syncing the file location and re-establishing links from there, re-establishing links from SharePoint instead of in Teams, making sure auto-save is enabled on both documents and establishing links only from the desktop apps,  removing spaces from the names of the files... and much more! I'm stumped - so any help would be appreciated. We have been dealing with this for several weeks. Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

Hi Tarah,

Based on your post, I tested on my end with the latest version (1907) of monthly channel and the links update as expected when I open PPT in desktop application.

Did you change the location of PowerPoint or Excel workbook after linking? If you subsequently move the Excel/PowerPoint file to another folder, that would break the link between the chart in the PowerPoint presentation and the data in the Excel workbook.

In addition, the Office version (1906) I behind update. The latest version for monthly channel is 1907 (Build 11901.20176). I’ll suggest you update Office and then check the result. To know how to install Office updates, please see Install Office updates.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information:

  1. Please confirm the file format of PPT and Excel workbook.
  2. Does this happen with a specific PPT? For the test purpose, link an Excel chart in PowerPoint and then check if you get the same error.
  3. In PPT, select the chart, right-click on it and select Update link, see if this works.
  4. In PPT, select the chart, right-click on it and select Linked worksheet object>Edit. Does it open the workbook?

Thanks,

Neha
