Excel File with 3MB file size won't open in Excel desktop app - What should I do?

I just bought a new laptop with the following specs:

I started working with the my workbooks and anything above 3000 KB file size I cannot seem to successfully open. I tried all steps that I could find in the forums but nothing is working. I can open the same files in excel using the browser version.

Is this doc located on OneDrive or the local PC?

If you hold the ctrl key when starting Excel, to force safe mode, and within Excel open that doc, what then?

If it opens

Within Excel>File>Options>Add-ins>Manage Com Add-ins>Go....... what is listed whether active or not?

Hi Jean,

Thanks for posting in the community.

According to your description, may I confirm whether you have downloaded the document on the PC? How about opening Excel application, then clicking Open to open it?

Here are the suggestions you could try:

1. Update your Office

2. Set Excel into Safe Mode and check whether you could open the document

3. Set Windows into Clean boot and check whether the issue is caused by a background program

If the issue still exists, I would like to collect more information.

1. The Office version and system version

Office version: click File> Account, it is beside About Excel

System version: press win + R, type winver

2. Does the issue exist in one specific document or other documents? Please create a new document to test.

3. Does the issue exist in other apps, like Word?

4. Is there any error message pop on?

5. If it is convenient, please try to open the document on other machines.

If you have any updates, please feel free and share with us.

Regards,

George

Hi George,

Thank you for your reply.

I have the file saved on my PC and also uploaded it in my one drive to test if it opens up in the browser version of excel.

Yes i tried to open excel app first then open the file through that. It loads then it freezes when the bar indicator is almost full. Same result when under safe mode, freezes between 87% to 93%.

I have updated both my windows and office 365. Didn't do anything.

For the information you need:

1. The Office version and system version

Office Version: Version 2007 (Build 13029.20308 Click-to-run)

System version: Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.388)

2. Does the issue exist in one specific document or other documents? Please create a new document to test.

I checked this and it seems specific to these set of workbooks and not any other workbook I have with more than 3mb file size. I can seem to open even the 10mbs. The workbooks I am having issues with are work related workbooks with graphs. I have these workbooks between 700 kbs to 3000 kbs. I can open the files with 700 kbs but not those with 3000 kbs.

3. Does the issue exist in other apps, like Word? No

4. Is there any error message pop on? No it just freezes Excel - when I open the task manager the excel is on a "Not Responding" state.

5. If it is convenient, please try to open the document on other machines.

I did, it opens in my old laptop.

I'll try the clean boot later and will update my post.

Hi Jean,

Thanks for posting back.

The issue is likely caused by the local environment.

Before trying the Clean boot, you could try to repair Office applications, and choose Online Repair.

Also, you could try to create a new Windows user profile, switch to it, then check whether you could open the document.

If the issue still exists, please provide us more information.

1. Which version of Office in your old laptop?

2. What kind of format of these graphs?

Regards,

George

Hello,

Sorry for the very late reply. I haven't done the clean boot because I am busy these couple of weeks.

I decided to work on the file online for now as that seems to work. The workbook that I cannot open have 3 sheets that are restricted. Usually those shows the graphs. I cannot share to as these files are client files.

Yes I have tried that repair office application too, didn't work.

I have multiple user profile and tried that too, didn't work.

1. Which version of Office in your old laptop? - same version

2. What kind of format of these graphs?Same version - locked I can't seem to access these online and couldn't tell in my other laptop.

Thanks,

Jean

Hi Jean,

Thanks for posting back.

Since the issue only exists on one specific PC, the issue is caused by your local environment.

If you are free, please try to:

1. Try to set your Windows into clean boot to check whether it is caused by a background program.

2. Use the uninstall support tool to uninstall Office, then reinstall it.

Appreciate your understanding and patience.

Regards,

George
