excel cannot be saved in the current format

I open a .xls with Office 2010.  When I try to SAVE, I get thisexcel cannot be saved in the current format...  It wants to save as .xlsx  -   How can I avoid this?  Very irritating and time consuming.

Answer
Try using Save As, rather than Save. Save would probably use the default file type, xlsx.
