Excel 2010 - inexplicable, re-appearing invisible boxes

In several worksheets, invisible boxes keep being created alongside, and to the right of, the second or third column that slows the process drastically.

These boxes are noticeable by missing parts of letters or numbers and a double-arrow that appears when the mouse moves over it. Clicking a double-arrow exposes the box that can be deleted. However, another box often appears in the same place! At times, I have deleted about 10 boxes before they stop re-appearing... until I close and re-open the file! Boxes may be from one to many rows high.

I also have a [  ] dialog box in a worksheet that can be 'ticked', but cannot be deleted.

I have had un-removable dialog boxes. When clicked, they brought up a message about non-existent link or code. I got around several of these by creating new worksheets and copying several years' worth of data - a real pain!

I have tried asking about this before, but cannot locate place or the method I used. Can an answer or a link to an answer be e-mailed? *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

Sorry for the long delay... I have had some distracting personal problems and then couldn't log into "answers".

My issues are now nowhere as bad as my EXCEL 2010!

My Excel 2010 is now a serious problem...

My problem manifests as a skeletal / transparent image of a picture frame on a vertical separator between cells. When the cursor is moved over this frame, a double-headed arrow appears. If the mouse if clicked, the frame appears and "Picture Tools" is highlighted. If these frames are deleted, they re-appear. Sometimes, if 10 or so frames are deleted from the same place the frame disappears, but tends to re-appear elsewhere. Settings in Picture Tools make the frame more visible but I cannot find any option to remove entirely remove or inhibit them.

These frames, illustrated in the screen dump, below, are a sample from part of one row. I highlighted them all of these with "Ctrl-click". They have appeared in two major, large worksheets containing a few decades or personal records that I fear are in jeopardy of being lost.

Since the frames appeared, they have slowed Excel so that it is non-workable. Excel takes forever to change between open files; sometimes it won't change between files; and the cursor is extremely slow to move between cells. Closing files can take minutes rather than seconds.

I have copied data to new worksheets, but that also copied the problem! I tried saving as .xls files but was also unsuccessful.

[ It seems as though every "refinement" Microsoft does makes its products worse... Windows 7 (Not responding)...8 (Not responding) and taking away short-cut keys..., Office 2010 (this Excel bug and many Word anomalies), Office 365 (Word and Excel, hang off-line on a 'portable' laptop)...

Help to eliminate this problem would be appreciated.

If possible, can you share a sample file. Does not look like an addins issue, but you coudl start excel in safe mode and check if it helps.

I don't have a web page and don't know how to share / link a file. I have attached two sample files to the e-mail notifying me of your reply.

The sample files are my data files with several decades of worksheets and other data removed. I have highlighted some frames with the Frame/Format feature to make them easier to find.

Excel frequently gives "Not Responding" with the populated files, and it can take several minutes for it to respond to save or to close the files. Scrolling takes a long time.

My files are almost unusable.

Hello, and sorry for the tardiness. I had no luck making SkyDrive work, but I now have OneDrive working, and hope it does this job. I'm attempting to link to you samples of two files with which I have the most trouble. Most of the sheets of personal data have been removed. I found when clicking to remove these frames that Frame Formatting was highlighted, so I have formatted the pests to highlight them.

When using these files under Windows 7, almost every action is followed by (Not Responding) and the screen is likely to become washed out.

From 30-40 years of personal data are threatened by this anomaly.

I'll be most grateful if anyone can get rid of these unwanted frames.

Cheers, Col
