Eudora and MS Exchange Server questions

Hello

1) My employer uses exchange server outsourced to MS via their MS 365

2) I use Eudora 7.1.0.9 for my email client in conjunction with Exchange. Configured as POP.  I have been doing so for 7 plus years with no problem. Works smooth as silk.

3) However, as of May 2, 2016, any email I receive that contains an attachment is now littered with unwanted text in the body of the email, at the top and bottom of the email. Examples shown below. To me it looks like exchange is scanning incoming attachments for whatever reason, and leaving behind garbage in my emails.

GMT"

4) I'm convinced this is the result of "something" that MS just started doing (with an unintended consequence)

5) Also, when checking emails using Outlook or OWA, the emails are fine. The problem only occurs using Eudora.

6) Any idea why this is all of a sudden happening?

7) Any idea how to make it stop?

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

According to the examples, they are part of the message headers.
Since Outlook and OWA work fine, it indicates that Office 365 for Business online services are fine.
Given the situation, I suggest you use Outlook or OWA as a workaround and contact Eudora support for this issue.

Thanks for your understanding.

H Franky,

But here's the thing.

- Its been working fine for 7 years without issue

- This happened suddenly (2 days ago)

- Eudora has not changed. Same version I have been using for 7 plus years. 7.1.0.9

- Ergo, something that Microsoft did with the exchange server caused this to start happening

What I would like to know from MS is

- What changed with your exchange server?

- Given the info I have provided, can MS fix it on your end so garbage text ceases to appear in the body of incoming emails?

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Sorry that you are impacted, I do not have much details to share based on your inquiry. Exchange Online is an evolving product where new features are introduced from time to time. The best practice is to run an email client that optimized for Exchange Online ie: Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird.

Thanks,

Chee Loon

Hello Chee,

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. It is appreciated. I understand your point about using another mail client. I may have no choice. I have 7 years of business emails in Eudora very carefully organized with filters, directories, subdirectories, etc. These emails are essential to my day to day functioning, as they act as a data base of who said what and when. Changing to Outlook will be painful. Very painful. But if that is the only option, I guess I will just have to roll with it.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Chee,

Like Dave I have many years, more than 7, I'm guessing fifteen, of emails and filters and history. I have tried Outlook and found that it did not perform and was very difficult to use. I run my projects with Eudora.

When I display all headers in a Eudora email I see this:

X-Microsoft-Exchange-Diagnostics:
        1;BLUPR08MB696;9:21i90CKClG06lDOuhaRlrZ4cIBZmutHM6WPc5fVKIcgD2leDp/BNABO7t1VihYizhVMgEi99fvEGPCMRlMHiRkQUvSThwz1uABMNp9aumBFi57qguf9EkfsWSsnBbbgRlLcZWVx4+8srsVv+fhST7DxX68ETZOD6aTNL0Yf+F8i9Yna2dmTFlMObATZ47t8El5AtEEICtIjFFSjDSCPOFw==
MIME-Version: 1.0

Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
        boundary="_000_CY1PR1201MB1084B651DF2E746C0B505E2EB4060CY1PR1201MB1084_"
X-Microsoft-Exchange-Diagnostics:

        1;BLUPR08MB696;9:21i90CKClG06lDOuhaRlrZ4cIBZmutHM6WPc5fVKIcgD2leDp/BNABO7t1VihYizhVMgEi99fvEGPCMRlMHiRkQUvSThwz1uABMNp9aumBFi57qguf9EkfsWSsnBbbgRlLcZWVx4+8srsVv+fhST7DxX68ETZOD6aTNL0Yf+F8i9Yna2dmTFlMObATZ47t8El5AtEEICtIjFFSjDSCPOFw==

There is a blank line before "Content-Type..." which I believe is causing the problem. I also believe the blank line should not be there. Moreover, if you look closely at the X-Microsoft-Exchange-Diagnostics: headers you'll see that they appear to be duplicates.

I suspect that this is a bug in the latest release and that the second set of headers should NOT be there.

Thanks for any help you might be in kicking this upstairs.

...Bob

Not yet.

According to the "RFC822: Standard for ARPA Internet Text Messages" Found here:

https://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc822/

...the snippet I posted above does not follow the standard which is:

3. LEXICAL ANALYSIS OF MESSAGES
3.1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A message consists of header fields and, optionally, a body. The body is simply a sequence of lines containing ASCII characters. It is separated from the headers by a null line (i.e., a line with nothing preceding the CRLF). (emphasis mine)

I''m sure MS products would like to comply with standards. Seems like a simple fix to get rid of the out-of-compliance blank line?

Thanks... Bob

Well, when and IF it gets addressed I will know immediately as I use Eudora daily. And as long as the garbage characters remain, this tells me MS has not addressed it yet...

Did MS ever get this issue resolved?  Or does anyone have fix for Eudora users? My company just moved to an exchange server, and I now have the same issue with the headers being added to top and bottom of any email I receive with an attachment.

Hi Brian - The answer is no, MS has not addressed this. And I do not think they ever will. I still have to deal with the garbage characters when using Eudora.
