Double clicking on a PowerPoint presentation will not open ppt

I have a pc with windows 10 and Office 2016 (including powerpoint 2016)   When I double click on a ppt file or pptx, it will not open.

I have to open ppt and then search for the file to open it.  Help Please

You can get this error if you have a trial version of Office installed, and then install a regular purchased version w/o first uninstalling the trial version.

Quite a few PCs come with trial versions pre-installed.  It's best to remove the trial version before doing anything else, but since there's no way for a user to KNOW this ahead of time, bad stuff happens.

You'll want to remove the trial version, then repair the "real" 2016 version of Office.

This refers to Office 2010 but should still be valid

Just in case, be sure you have the means to install 2016 from scratch, in case something goes wrong.
