Domain tranfer from third-party registrar to Microsoft

Hello, I have a domain registered from Godaddy.com.

But DNS zones and website are hosted at Siteground.com. E-mail service is subscribed under the GSuite.

I also have Microsoft365 business standard subscription. So my concern is that how can I transfer my domain from Godaddy to Microsoft without affecting the working of my website (from Siteground.com) and e-mail services (from GSuite) ?

Once my domain is hosted under Microsoft, I also want manage DNS zones from Microsoft only.

Please help me for the same, I am new to this.

Regards,

Patel Sagar

Hello Patel Sagar,

Thank you for posting your question in our forum.

From your description, if you want to have Microsoft set up and manage your domain's DNS records for you, you must firstly switch your domain's nameserver records to point to Microsoft 365, after that, Microsoft will set up your services for you and then your domain‘s DNS records are managed at Microsoft.

However, when you change your domain's NS records to point to the Microsoft name servers, all the services that are currently associated with your domain are affected. For example, all email sent to your domain will start coming to Microsoft after you make this change. In other words, you will not be able to continue to use the email service from GSuite.

For more detailed instructions, here is an article for your reference: Change nameservers to set up Microsoft 365 with any domain registrar.

Best regards,

Jennifer

Hello Jenifer,

Thank you for the swift response. My main concern is my e-mail services which is hosted at GSuite. So what are the steps I have to take to migrate my e-mail accounts from GSuite to Microsoft 365. I have total 9 mail account under my GSuite account. I have 3 licenses of Microsoft 365 business standard. So how can I do that and what I have to do?

I have 9 GSuite accounts so for that should I have to purchase more Microsoft 365 accounts or is there any other option available? Please guide my for the same. I am little bit confuse here.

Regards,

Patel Sagar

Hello Patel Sagar,

Thanks for your reply and share your concerns with us.

If you need to be able to login to all accounts to send/receive emails, you need to purchase and assign licenses for each user account. As for the detailed steps about how to migrate from Gsuite to Microsoft 365, you may refer to the link below to get the detailed information:

Hello Jenifer,

During last 3 days, I have completed the migration of my mail accounts from Gsuite to Microsoft 365. Currently mail routing is configured so mail are delivered at Gsuite and all mails are forwarded to Microsoft 365 mailboxes.

But I have some queries about Microsoft 365 subscription.

        - Currently we have 3 business standard licenses.

        - And we have another 6 accounts to whom we have applied  Microsoft Teams Exploratory license.
So for all these 6 accounts which license we have to purchase?

Please check attached image file for the account information.

Here it@*** is the super admin and other 2 licenses have been applied to r.m.vamsee@***** and rohan@****accounts.

Please check following image for mailbox details.

And currently we have not updated MX entry in our DNS zone. It still points to Google mail server.

So once you update us with license information, we shall apply license to user accounts and after that we shall update MX record in DNS which will point to Microsoft mail server.

If any other details are required, please feel free to ask.

Regards,

Sagar Patel

Hi Sagar Patel,

Many thanks for your reply with the detailed information. Since our forum is a public forum, to protect your privacy, I removed the email information in your post. Thanks for your understanding.

From the picture you shared, these 6 accounts have been assigned the Microsoft Teams Exploratory license, this include the following experience:

As you can see from above picture, it includes Exchange online license. So eligibled users with this license can send and receive emails via the Outlook web app.

Moreover, the Microsoft Teams Exploratory license is available at no additional cost until your next agreement anniversary or renewal on or after January 2021. At that time, end users on a Microsoft Exploratory experience license will need to move to a paid license that includes Teams. Any Microsoft Exploratory experience licenses initiated after that will remain available at no additional cost until your next anniversary or renewal cycle.

So, if the licenses and services included in the Microsoft Teams Exploratory license can meet your demands, you can simply continue to use this license until your next agreement anniversary or renewal cycle.

For more detailed information, please see: Manage the Microsoft Teams Exploratory license.

Best regards,

Jennifer

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for the reply.

Now if I update MX record in my DNS zone (currently hosted at s****.com) and which will points to Microsoft 365 server, my e-mail service will work properly.

And after that if I want to transfer my DNS zone from s****.com to Microsoft 365 then what I have to do?

My domain registrar is godaddy.com and in that name server entries point to s*** server.

With regards,

Patel Sagar

Hi Patel Sagar,

Glad to hear from you again. If you want transfer your DNS zone from s****.com to Microsoft 365 services, like email, you need to change your domain's nameserver (or NS) records at your domain registrar to point to the Microsoft 365 primary and secondary nameservers. Then, because Microsoft 365 hosts your DNS, the required DNS records for your services are set up automatically for you.

Here is an article for your reference: Change your domain's nameserver (NS) records

Moreover, since you mentioned you also use your domain with a website, under this circumstance and if you want Microsoft manages your DNS records, you need to take some additional steps to change the domain's NS records to point to Microsoft 365.

For the detailed steps, please see: Update DNS records to keep your website with your current hosting provider.

Best regards,

Jennifer
