Difference Between Microsoft 365 and Office Home and Student

HI There,

I am just trying to get a better of understanding of what the true difference between Microsoft 365 and Office Home and Student? Other than the 1-time fee for Office Home and Student. Is Microsoft 365 a better option in the long run?

Also does either of them include Publisher? I am a volunteer for a food pantry and would like to use Publisher to create flyers and brochures.

Thank you for the help.

Hello Gingersnap2091

Hi, I'm Karl and will be happy to help you today.

Whether a MS 365 subscription is a better option for you depends on your requirements but if Publisher is a key requirement - then a MS 365 subscription would be your option between the two

In a nutshell - the benefits of a MS 365 subscription )Personal or Family)

#1 - Includes the full suite of desktop Office apps including <Publisher> & Outlook
#2 - Is always the latest version of Office
#3 - can be used on all of your devices with the only limitation being that only 5 devices can be logged into Office at any one time
#4 - includes a <Premium> 50GB ad-free Outlook.com account
#5 - includes a 1TB OneDrive account

Office Home & Student

#6 - can only be used on one computer
#7 - only includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint
#8 - A new purchase is required if you want to upgrade to a new version of Office

From a price perspective, 2 yrs of a MS 365 subscription is less then a one-time purchase of Office Home & Student

HI and Good Evening,

I'm Andy your friendly tech wanting to share a general direction towards the question presented.

GET 365 Personal and gradually get to 365 Business because it's the new age of DNS (Doman Name Service) and with personal that includes PowerPoint you can do many of the Publisher DTP functions (wrap text around boxes, incorporate pictures, grids and typeset flyers) in PowerPoint. You can still use Publisher with onedrive and create the content necessary for your flyer with the 365 office apps and then share with publisher yourself with the capability of later with Business subscription to add it to web page.... Great huh?!!! DO IT AND GRADUALLY ITS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE A MONTH, My friend.

We can't say what is "better" for you ...

Short form:

Based on your stated requirement for Publisher, your choice is limited to 365.

.

If money is important, AND you only need Office on one machine, then Home and Student MAY be better.

.

BUT, since you want Publisher, you are limited to 365 Personal or Family. Publisher and Access are limited to Windows installations only.

.

In theory, both of these licenses do NOT give you permission, the 'right', to create content for your "food pantry" (I'm guessing that is a non-profit organization?).

.

Before YOU pay for 365, contact all of your family and friends ("extended family" <g> ) to find out if any of them have 365 Family with one of their 5 allowed "shares" that they can give you. Or someone who has 365 Personal and is willing to upgrade to Family and share the cost with you. Even 2 people sharing Family save money, ie $100 vs 2x$70 each year. A 6-way split of Family works out to $16.67 EACH per year. Great deal. They should contact MS to get a "non-profit" license. They MAY qualify for free license(s).

.

When you are setting up a 365 Family sharing group, also check to see if any of the people use 365 at work. They MAY qualify for the 30% discount on the HUP, Home Use Program discount.
