"Delete" in Track Changes Not Enabling Strikethrough

I have a Mac OS X, v.10.9.4, and am using a keyboard WITHOUT the number pad and a trackpad (not a mouse).

I've enabled all the Track Changes Features, and yet when I highlight the word I want to delete in the text (in this instance, "otherwise"), and press "delete," the word disappears from the original text instead of showing up with a strikethrough, and the message in the comment balloon reads: DELETED: otherwise.

I've contacted Apple and Microsoft to no avail. Does anyone else have this problem? Do track changes work if you're using a full keyboard?

Thanks for any help/ advice.

Answer
In Word 2016 use the flyout option in the Tracking section of the ribbon. Under Advanced Options change the Markup/Deletions pulldown menu item to Strikethrough.
