cursor problem with selecting text

i have MSOffice 2016 on a new HP Pavilion computer with a wireless mouse.  In MSWord, when i am selecting text to move it, the cursor selects text and/or one word to the LEFT of the cursor (as well as text to the RIGHT).  So i have to repeat the action, or else i inadvertently move text from the LEFT of the cursor that i did not want to move.  I checked my mouse settings, and i don't have any other problems with the mouse, so i don't think it's the mouse....  Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Hello,

For better assistance, we'd like to ask the following:

  • When did you start experiencing this issue?
  • Are you using the latest version of driver on your wireless mouse?
  • Are you experiencing it with all of Office application or only for Microsoft Word?

We are looking forward to your reply.

Regards.

--problem started immediately with install of new MSOffice 2016 software.

--Mouse is brand new and came with the brand new computer, so I assume driver is the latest version.

--I did not notice any problem with Excel.  only with MSWord.

(lots of trouble signing in -- it's still me J-Piha.

thanks.

Thank you for the information. To resolve the issue, we suggest repairing your Office 2016 from your Control Panel. To learn how, check this link. We suggest checking the drive of your mouse to ensure it's up-to-date. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc.
  3. Find the driver of your mouse.
  4. Right-click, and select Properties.
  5. Click Driver > Update Driver.

Let us know how it goes.

Try changing the "Use smart paragraph selection" and "Use smart cursoring" options under File>Options>Advanced>Editing options.
Hope this helps,

observing further what the cursor does, it seems that if I point the cursor EXACTLY at the first letter of the word I want to select, it selects correctly.  But if I point the cursor at the single space just to the left of the word I want, then it selects the entire word to the left of the word I really wanted to select.  It seems to require me to select the location extremely precisely --  not how I want it to work when i'm just trying to edit a document.  (I guess my aim with the mouse isn't ordinarily that precise.)  The "smart cursoring" option might help. i'll have to fiddle with that more.

I would still welcome any additional ideas to allow trouble-free editing...

thanks.
