Closing Apply Styles from the keyboard

In Word 2010, Ctrl+Shift+S opens the Apply Styles dialog box.

I heard anecdotally that in Word 2007, Esc closes it -- but that doesn't work in Word 2010.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for closing Apply Styles in Word 2010?
Pressing ESC moves the focus to the document, which allows you to work
with it.

To close the Apply Styles pane from the keyboard (after you have
activated or opened it with Ctrl+Shift+S), you can press Ctrl+SpaceBar
followed by C.

Wow—thanks Stefan! I'd never realized that Ctrl + Space was how to access that little drop-down menu, and it had frustrated me no end ever since I started using Word 2010. This makes me happy.

Hi Stefan,

Thanks great tip, took me a while to find this answer.

I knew about ALT-Spacebar which I tried, but didn't think of trying CTRL-Spacebar. All the different ALT-char in Office2013 have really messed up my productivity!!

I hate mice, always preferred to use keyboard. Legacy of old IBM 3270 habits.

Thanks again.

This is an old question, which so far as I know has been unanswered for ten years or more.

Harrymc on Stackoverflow put out the following macro which seems to work fine.

Sub ApplyStylesClose()
    ' harrymc 8 January 2024
    ' https://superuser.com/questions/1825151/word-keyboard-shortcut-to-close-apply-styles-popup
    ' Attach a keyboard shortcut
    CommandBars("Apply Styles").Visible = False
End Sub

If someone can think of an intuitive keyboard shortcut, I can come up with an Add-In.

The shortcut to display it is Ctrl+Shift+S and Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S is already taken to display the Styles Pane.

Volunteering to "pay forward" the help I've received in the Microsoft user community.
