Changes made to Word doc offline were lost during OneDrive sync

I was working offline on a Word doc yesterday for hours.  I saved the document frequently, so I would expect a copy to be somewhere in a local folder. But when I logged in this morning and connected to the Internet, the file was synced to the version on OneDrive, but my offline changes were reverted to what was already on OneDrive.  I've looked for versions of my document, but can't find one with the changes I made offline.  Is there a copy of the offline version of my document anywhere on my laptop?  I just don't want to redo all the hours of work I did offline yesterday if a copy is still available.

Thanks!!!

I should clarify that a version of the document I was working on offline was already stored on OneDrive.  I would expect that the changes I made offline would have synced to the OneDrive version since they would have been the most recent changes.  But when I connected this morning, the document reverted to the version that had been on OneDrive yesterday morning, without any of the changes I made offline.

Shouldn't there still be a copy of the offline version somewhere on my laptop?

Hi Tom,

If you saved the file when you edit it, the AutoRecover file will be cleaned up in your machine. It was meant to recover the file for unexpected closure like crash or power off. If you would like to check, you can get the location in Word > File > Options > Save > AutoRoecover file location.

Also, you could check OneDrive history versions see if there are any versions was added at the time when you connect.

To prevent this from happening again, we recommend you use save as to save important versions of files.

Sorry for the experience.

Regards,

Alex

Thanks, Alex. I wasn't able to find the offline version there either.  Looks like it's just gone.  Thank you for your help though.  I really appreciate it.

Gosh this is terrible.  I was working on 4 documents across a long flight, with AutoSave turned on -- these were existing docs syncing to OneDrive.  I exited the application cleanly.  Opened again whilst on the flight, all changes seemed intact.  Now that I have connectivity again I opened the docs, only to find that none of my changes are present -- it's like I hadn't done anything at all.

Nothing in Version History indicates there were changes made, and there is nothing in the AutoRecovery pane to show for hours of lost labour.

Please advise...!

Hi penpenracer,

AutoSave is a feature based on the internet connection. It cannot save anything without the network. Sorry for the misleading and all the trouble it has caused.

You can try to locate the files in the File Explorer, right-click > Properties > check Previous Versions tab see if there are any local previous version available. I just found this function in Windows. I should have suggested Tom do this too. Since you have tried the OneDrive history versions and there are no AutoRecover files, this is the last suggestion I can think of. Sorry about all the trouble.

Regards,

Alex
