Can't sign in to office desktop apps

Hi,

After being unable to sign in to a specific company's apps, such as OneDrive, Teams, Outlook, I followed the accepted answer posted in another question:

Now, all my business accounts are unable to connect.

  • Teams: Error code 0xcaa70004

  • OneDrive: Error code 0x8004de40

  • Outlook: "Disconnected"

I have also tried Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA), but whenever the sign-in dialog shows up (validating user open authentication) it's immediately closed and I am thrown back to the question "is this the affected machine" and I can't proceed.

What IS working is:

  • Sign in to the web-apps

  • Using another local Windows account

I do want to keep my account, since I have set up things like WSL that I don't want to go throgh the process to set up again. I'm fine converting it to a microsoft account using a business email, but selecting "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead" just gives a dialog stating "Something went wrong".

Using a local account on Windows 11 (KB5017383)

Dear filipf_123

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description, it seems that you can't sign in your office desktops applications and got error message. Please don't worry, we can work together to narrow down the behavior.

As you mentioned that, you can sign in the web version of office and if you using another local account , it also can work. Given this situation, to confirm if the behavior is related to the local environment, please try to disable your Antivirus and Firewall then to check the result

Proxy: Click on Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy

Toggle the option Automatically detect settings to ON.

Toggle the option Use a proxy server to OFF.

Firewall: you can refer to how to turn off the firewall on Windows.

Meanwhile, please try the following steps to check the behavior:

1. Go to Windows settings>Accounts>Access work or school>find the work account then Click Disconnect>then reconnect the account to check the behavior.

2. Use online repair tool to repair office then to see the result, for your reference:  Repair an Office application (microsoft.com)

3. Open Office in clean boot to see if the other programs caused the problem, you can refer to How to perform a clean boot in Windows (microsoft.com)

Besides, to help us narrow down the behavior, we would like to collect more detailed information about the situation you are experiencing so that we can have further investigation:

  • Does other users in your organization also experienced the same behavior?

  • Can you tell us your office version? Go to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features>find the office you have then tell us the version

  • Image

  • And can you share the screenshot of the error messages you got to us so that we can have a further investigation?

We’re looking forward to your reply and will continue to help you all the time!  If there are any misunderstanding or unclear, you can post back in your free time.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

Sincerely,

Stacey | Microsoft Community Moderator

Hi Stacey,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried your suggestions, and below is the result for each step.

Disconnect and connect work or school account
This made no difference

Repair office
This made no difference. I was only able to repair the "Office" app. Teams, OneDrive and Outlook didn't have the option.

Clean boot
This made no difference

Does other users in your organization also experienced the same behavior?

No, only me

Can you tell us your office version? Go to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features>find the office you have then tell us the version
Microsoft 365 - 16.0.15601.20148
Microsoft Teams - 1.5.00.21668
Microsoft OneDrive - 22.186.0904.0001

And can you share the screenshot of the error messages you got to us so that we can have a further investigation?

Outlook

Teams (After disconnect work account as you described)

Teams (after pressing close above)

Since Teams gave 404 on login.microsoftonline.com i made an nslookup and ping to that address:

However, with the other local user account that is able to sign in to the same accounts that are failing, there was also a time out when trying to ping login.microsoftonline.com...

Thanks

Dear filipf_123

Thank you for your quick response and we also really appreciate you spent your precious time doing these tests and providing the detailed description for each step to us.

Since you tried all the possible suggestions and the problem still persists, and the behavior only happened in office desktop apps with your current account. This behavior maybe relayed to your tenant account. Given this situation, we kindly suggest you contact the IT admin to create a support ticket by Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Docs to report this issue to related team so that the related team can help you remotely check the possible reason. And collect the logs by reproducing the problem and do the further investigation to you. The support team over there has higher permission than us, they can involve more resource and investigate the issue from back end as fast as possible. Also, they can help contact the related team very fast if necessary. This is the best and quick way to get fast and detailed help on the problem you are facing to resolve it. About how to find the admin in your organization, you can refer to How do I find my Office 365 admin

Appreciate your patience and understanding again!

Sincerely,
