Can't open OneNote due previous session exiting

When I try to open my desktop OneNote, a dialogue box pops up with "A previous session of OneNote is still exiting. OneNote must wait for it to finish before it can start again."

How long am I supposed to wait? It's been hours! And I can't find any other way to access all my research material.

Anita.

You must end Onenote.exe process from task manager before you can reopen up OneNote again.

For information about how to end a process using Windows Task Manager follow the instructions provided in below mentioned article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323527

If the above mentioned steps were not helpful Restart the computer and then try to Re-open OneNote.

I found a dialogue box still waiting for an answer when I minimized my other screens. I cleared that box, then restarted the computer and everything came back.

The same thing has happened several times now although I don't know why. Each time, I've managed to get my notebooks back.

Thank you for the answer.

Why is this happening in the first place and what can we do so we don't have to restart the computer?

I believe it's related to locking problems with shared notebooks.
Are you using a notebook on a shared drive, like we do?

We have this problem so often that we're looking for alternative applications for this reason alone.

The process cannot be ended from Task Manager, and Restarting the computer in this situation causes the whole system to hang, we have to hard-shutdown in order to get it working.

Then your case must be different from mine ... for me, killing the ONENOTE.EXE process always does the trick (I did it earlier today!)  (I'm using OneNote 2007 on Windows 7.)

I don't use notebooks but, I experience this error if I close OneNote, lock my computer, then unlock and use the next day. Additional to having this issue, when I do get the program back up (be it Task Manager or Re-boot) I usually loose the pages I edited/added.

Might I be so bold to say, OneNote SUCKS. Don't get me wrong it is an amazing concept and mostly reliable. But when you launch and program and boast how you don't need to save...... then 10% don't deliver, recognize there is a problem and add the darn Save function.

Sorry for the rant. The real reason for my reply is to ask, what programs are alternatives to this?

Thanks,
