Can't create data file outlook 365

Hi all,

Anyone else have this issue?

Problems with adding an account in outlook 365
I've tried on 2 computers also and same issue (tried many many times)

Error says:

Adding *** Email address is removed for privacy *** (not my real email address)
Something went wrong

We couldn't create the outlook data file. Make sure the disk you're saving to isn't full or write protected and that the file isn't being used.

I have 220GB free on this computer (over 50GB on the other computer) and disk isn't write protected on either computer

The strange thing is it actually creates a data file as the pane on the left show the data file and going into data files TAB also show the data file.

I can't delete it as it says:

This data file is associated with a mail account. To remove it use the "email" tab

The only way I've found is find the file location on C: and delete them that way, then right click on data file on folder pane and click close

Version 1709 (build 8528.2139 click-to-run)

Known issue?? work around or fix?

Cheers

Hi Dann,

Only see to be since this pop up started when adding a new account.

Mind you, it has been some time since i've had to add a new account.

Things I've tried:

Control panel>repair>online (Didn't fix issue)

Registry fix using ccleaner (didn't fix)

Using a different email account (didn't fix issue)

I'm going to try a uninstall and reinstall on one of my computers to see if that fixes it

Ok,

So that's a bit weird.

I totally uninstalled.

Once i did that 2 folder icons appeared on the desktop.

I tried to delete but even once deleted I refreshed the desktop and they appear again.

A quick google search leads this to office uninstalls.....??? Why?

So, i left them there and reinstalled office.

One folder changed it's name and the other one changed from an empty folder to a file looking icon...???

Just tried refreshing the screen again after about 5mins and they disappeared.....bit strange!

So, i opened outlook went to add a new account and the old add account screen appeared and works PERFECTLY!!

Morale of the story, do "fix" something that works....

Must be something to do with the coding of the new pop up for adding an account??

I have also been having this issue since early October.  My gmail account had been installed and running successfully, but then started to error and not send/receive.  Error connecting to your gmail server was the gist of the error.  After attempting numerous times unsuccessfully to tweak and perfect the account settings, checking to make sure my gmail account was set up to "allow less secure applications" and set up for imap/pop, I removed the account and tried to re-add it.  I got the same add account pop up box that Cian W had, and have not been able to get my gmail account added in since.  I am getting the same list of my gmail addresses in the left pane, and have this error:  Something went wrong.  We couldn't create the outlook data file.  Make sure the disk you are saving to isn't full or write protected and that the file isn't being used.  I have done the online repair (no fix), a full uninstall and reinstall (no fix).  I also installed and ran the "G Suite Migration Tool for Microsoft Outlook" from Google and this just did the opposite of what I wanted...it merged all my old stuff from my Outlook data file into my Gmail.  Now I have tons of clean up to do.  Yay.

I am a computer technician, own my own company, and this is ridiculous. If I can't figure this out, it's a big problem. I don't have time to mess with this for hours and hours.  This is incredibly frustrating since I use (USED) outlook for my business communication, and have been out of commission for weeks limping on the gmail web based platform.  The add account interface in outlook is broken!@ and needs to be fixed.  I cannot get the old add account screen as Cian W did.

Please respond asap. Thank you.

KW

I also have been having this issue. I just bought a new computer and logged onto the Office 365. I had no problem adding the yahoo email on the outlook. But 5 minutes later, when I was trying to add the gmail onto the outlook, the exact dialogue appeared.

Please fixed this asap. Thank you

HM

I experienced these same issues attempting to add a custom account pointed to my personal domain. It's not just a GMail issue. The bottom line appears to be that the Add Account wizard in Outlook doesn't work properly. New email accounts need to be added through the Profile Manager.

Thank you for the link, Amylove Loy. Though my issue was not GMail related, the same workaround applies to everyone receiving this error, I think.

Same issue. I have a brand new laptop and installed a clean 365 download from an existing account. Opened Outlook, set up main account successfully. Went to set up a second account and got this error message.

Note that I don't use Outlook on any other devices because it proved too buggy and I spent hours on the phone to MS support who tried and failed to fix (different problem). I use Thunderbird else where but thought that since I'm paying through the nose for this service I may as well use it. Please fix this.

I had a boot issue with my computer that required me to wipe the disk clean and re-install Windows 10.  I have 3 email addresses.  One is a gmail, another is a work account on exchange server and the other is a business email I have with email set up as imap.  After re-installing Office, the gmail (set up as imap) and exchange email worked with no issues.  The other account gave me the same "could not create the outlook data file" just as described above, yet there is a data file there.  I can set it up as pop and it works fine, but cannot set up as imap.  The same account has no issues as imap on my android phone.  Help please!

I have had the same problem for the last month and have tried every fix you can think of but nothing works.  but i have now by trial and error found the soloution.

i have 5 email accounts 2 x exchange 2 x 1and1 and 1 gmail i have only been able to add 3 accounts up until now.

the problem is with the Exchange accounts as they lock everthing esle up.

the soloution is to remove all of your email accounts then add all of you non-exchange accounts first then add the exchange accounts. I have tried this a few times just to see if it was not a one off and it works every time.

as soon as you add the exchange account it locks the system and you cannot add another email account.

hope this helps.
