automate the text import wizard steps

Hi there,

I have a lot of .csv file exported from a database.  I need to open it up in excel and pivot it to do financial analyses.

I need to go through all the same steps every time when I open up the .csv file in the Excel which is tedious.  How can I automate some steps in the Text Import Wizard so to save some time?

When I open up the .csv file in Excel, it cannot recognize it is a .csv text file and defaulted as "fixed width" instead of "delimited".   I have to change the selection every time. Then I need to select the "comma" as the delimiter.   Finally, I like to 'text" all columns except the dollar column.

Is there a way to save all these steps as default in the wizard?   Or any other options to speed up converting a .csv to excel file?

Thanks,

DC1032

You could record a macro of the steps needed to import the .csv file.

Then, if necessary, edit the recorded code to make it work with other .csv files.

If you wish, you can post the recorded code here and explain how you would like it to be improved.

After that, you'd only need to run the macro.

Hi DC1032, thank you for reaching out!

My name is Rolyn, an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft Excel User like you. I would love to help you out with your concern.

I can relate with you in this issue as I have to export .csv files every time as well. What I normally do is when I open the file, I save the file as .xslx (Excel Workbook) before I edit anything. After that, you can run a macro to automate the fixed formatting and changes you're making to the file every time. In order to do so, you would need to record a macro, and every click or changes you made will be recorded in it until you stop recording. All that's left for you is to analyze your data.

For a guide on how to create/record a macro, kindly refer here: https://trumpexcel.com/record-macro-vba/
