Auto-refresh data conection in Excel without opening

I am trying to export a SharePoint list into Excel and have it automatically refresh without opening it. Is there a way to do this? Would a macro work?

Side note: Under Data Connection, the option for "Refresh every XX minutes" is greyed out.

It is not possible to fire a macro inside a closed workbook. The workbook has to be open.
You could have opened the Workbook through Windows Job Scheduler periodically and closed it after refresh within Macro. But since your duration is only 2 minutes, it will be overkill.
