Adding days hours minutes in Excel

When I check custom formatting, there is no format for days hours and minutes.  I also cannot find

sources on the Internet and does this is a simple way by using the SUM function to add the quantity

of two cell2.  I need the format be: d h:m or dd hh:mm.

How do you add:       0 22:02    (meaning 0 days 22 hours and 2 minutes)

                                   2 23:01    (meaning 2 days 23 hours and 1 minute)

to get total                3 21:01    ( 3 days 21 hours 1 minute)

Thanks,

MJ

Answer

There is a custom format for days hours and minutes but entering the data in days hours and minutes is another matter. For the examples my regional date format is d/m/y so if you are in an m/d/y region then just change to suit your region.

You can use Number Format to format a column as dd hh:mm. However, if you enter 2 23:01 in the cell then Excel will treat it as text and you cannot sum it.

If you enter 2/1/1900 23:01 in one of the formatted cells then it will display  as 2 23:01 and you can sum it but if you check the formula bar at the top it will display 2/01/1900  11:01:00 PM. (or 01/2/1900 if you are in m/d/y regional format area). However, I am sure that you do not want to enter entire dates to represent the days.

I have previously got around the problem by entering the days in one column and the time in an adjacent column and sum them together in a third column that is custom formatted to days hours and minutes. They will then display in the custom format. See the screen capture below. The formulas used in column D are displayed in column E for information.
