Slow Music Playback Performance

I recently purchased the Lumia 822. Aside from the laundry list of complaints that I seem to share with every user regarding the utter lack of functionality in XBox Music and the (in)ability to sync music between PC and device...I am experiencing major performance issues on my phone when playing music. Specifically:

- When navigating the Music software on my device there is noticeable (2-3 seconds) delay at every click. Whether I am clicking on an artist from the list of artists, or a specific album, or a song, etc. this occurs.

- There is an enormous lag when using the Play Music button (shuffle all) from the home screen of the Music software. The entire device locks up immediately after pushing the button (all touch and hardware buttons become unresponsive). The music will begin playing after 5-10 seconds, however the device will not respond to commands again for around 30-60 seconds.

- Even once the device works again, if I am using the Play Music (shuffle all) function, there is a 2-3 second delay every time I try to skip tracks. Again, the music plays almost immediately but in this case the album artwork (even if blank), song titles, etc. do not load for 2-3 seconds.

I NEVER experienced anything like this on my HTC Trophy running WP7, which was a notably inferior device hardware-wise. My music collection is fairly large on the Lumia (around 38GB stored on a 64GB Micro SD Card), however I had a large collection on my Trophy as well (around 26GB) and never experienced any of this slow-down.

Has anybody else experienced these issues?

I'm not experiencing any of the lags you have described. Try soft reset of phone by pressing Volume Down + Power button until phone vibrates and restarts.

If it doesn't improve, then create a back up of your phone and try a hard reset.

Thanks for the suggestion. However I had actually tried all of the above before posting (sorry, my fault for not mentioning that). I have also tried reformatting the Micro SD card.

I will also note that I am not alone in experiencing this issue, as others have complained of identical problems over in the Master List Of Issues With XBox Music On WP8 thread.

Yes, I've had these issues as well. I'm convinced the issue is strongly influenced by microSD problems; as though the WP8 isn't managing the storage properly. XBox Music is sluggish (among all the metadata errors and missing album art, which are ancient technologies), I also experience sluggish picture taking.

I've also experienced duplicate songs showing up in albums, AND duplicate photos in my camera roll. This makes me think that many of the xBox Music issues are actually microSD managment issues.

I also experience these issues listening to music on my Lumia 820.

This is my third Windows Phone and I am disappointed that it has such problems.  I have to say that my first device, like the OP was an HTC Trophy and had no issues playing my music as one large shuffle list.  My Lumia 800 running 7.5 & 7.8 did have a slight delay between songs and a clicking/white noise issue which I was always unhappy with.

My new phone which I put a 32gb Class 10 Sandisk card in is having all the problems the OP describes... and so far I only have circa 1.5Gb of music on there!  It is also producing clicking/white noise, although to a lesser extent than the 800, which makes me think this could simply be a Nokia harware issue?

I would think it could have been the connection to my car stereo, but the HTC never had any problems at all??  The music seems better through my iPod earphones it must be said so I still so think it is interference from the antenna on the Nokia.

I would be interested to hear what the owners of HTC 8X and HTC 8S experience in this regard.

I think the pause between songs is related to DRM checking, but this is just a hunch.  My Lumia 800 is currently away being repaired as it simply crashed whilst playing music and proved unresponsive to the usual soft reset buuton presses.  If you check the Nokia forums, there were lots of reports about sound issues on the Lumia 800 and you will also notice some people found that while listening to music and travelling the phone would often lock up.... this was usually in an area with poor signal as well.  This leads me to believe that if the phone could not communicate for DRM purposes it would simply crash.  Both my phone and my wifes Lumia 800 suffered the same issues and would frequently lock up... mine was just terminal this time!!

The only reason I opted for the Nokia 820 was the inclusion of SD card plus I know Nokias commitment to Windows Phone... otherwise I would certainly have bought HTC again!

Hope I haven't gone too far off topic with any of that, but it's all food for thought... plus quite upsetting when you consider the masses of other problems related to the Xbox music app/syncing etc....

Richard.

In theory, I have a schedule phone call with tech specialist at Nokia, on Thursday at 1pm.

If they call me, I'll try my best to bring any info learned to this forum.

Same experience, by the way. I had a Class10 microSD and had a bad experience (duplicating music tracks, sluggish playback, crashing the OS, not synching properly with W8 phone app). So I bought a Class4 chip.

I still have all the Music issues, but the phone doesn't crash any more and it synchronizes with the W8 app on my laptop.  Well... it kind of sync's with it.  It'll copy albums to my phone then tell me "error- none of the files could be copied" even though they are all on the phone ...  Confusion abounds.

I did experience that with the 820 i temporarily owned, only when there was an SDCard in it. Without memory card it worked just fine. Tried 2 different good quality SDCard.

It worked fine on my 920 when I had the XBox Music Pass. Due to all the issues with the XBox service, i cancelled my music pass so am not using this anymore.

I have synced around 40GB of music onto my Lumia 620's microSD card, and I get a lag of more than 20 seconds each time I selecting an artist, album etc.  If I connect my phone via USB and browse the storage through file explorer, directory listings are near instantaneous, so I'm firmly in the belief that this is a software issue with XBox Music or the OS, rather than anything to do with reading the storage at a lower level.

Don't know if still relevant, but are you using xbox music and is your stuff full of duplicates? Because as long as it is this EXTREME lag (I had it as well) will remain ..

(oh and xbox music s* ... no, seriously, it may actually become good one day if they put in the work ... until then: nokia music is 1000 x better)

I figured I may as well add that I too am having these problems. I have an 822 with a 32gb class 10 card in it, and the delay when skipping to the next song drives me insane. The little click of white noise is also quite bothersome.

I have some of these problems with my Lumia 520 & 16GB Class 10 MicroSD card, but not quite so severe.

If I Shuffle All the music starts almost immediately but the phone is unresponsive for perhaps 5-10 seconds.

My biggest problem is the music keeps being interrupted:  It's an intermittent fault, but when it starts happening the track pauses for a second then continues and this keeps happening every 66 seconds like clockwork through the whole track.
