Unable to sign in to Windows Marketplace app...

Phone HTC Touch HD. Mobile operator O2. O/S Windows Professional 6.1

For several days now I have been unable to signin to Windows Marketplace on the phone. I get an error dialog saying "Marketplace could not connect to the Windows Live ID service. Please try again later". This happens every time I try to sign in.

I can browse for new apps on the Marketplace app it's just that when I have to sign in I get the problem.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Marketplace app.
I've checked the time/date on the phone and that the regional settings are correct.
I am using the correct Windows Live ID and password and have no problems signing in to Marketplace on my PC.
I've tried signing in whilst connected to 3G and whist connected to WiFi, but still the problem persists.

It appears that I am not alone with this problem.

I don't really want to go down the route of doing a hard reset and then having to reinstall everything from scratch if there is no guarantee that this will fix the Marketplace issue.

Any suggestions very much appreciated.
