Will we ever see OTA update?

your have a normal firmware variant. However, your particular firmware variant has not received the update, yet. For further explanation, please,

Should I install the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview?

That only updates your OS version not your firmware version. Please, post your Product Code.

[My] handset is a prototype that I use at my job since before launch.

In your special case, MishuRO, you should talk to the one who gave you this handset. Officially, only Microsoft Mobile Care is able to change the Product Code, which would turn your handset into a production firmware variant, which would give updates over the air – when release for that firmware variant.

in the Software Recovery Tool, what is your 7-letter product code (059…)? No Windows computer or USB: The same code is printed on your phone (underneath the battery cover). That code determines your firmware variant which determines your current version. We can check together whether the update is available for your firmware variant already, only with that code.

Perhaps your networks are a bit quicker at returning the updates to Microsoft than EE (for example!) here in the U.K.

The procedure, as I understand it, is that Microsoft first send any new firmware or OS updates directly to the network providers, so that they can add any 'bloatware etc.

The providers then return the updates to Microsoft who issue them to the end users on that particular network.

Hopefully I will receive something eventually, as I would rather wait to obtain an 'official' OTA update, rather than get one through the 'back door', as it were!

… expecting to see a date by when an update actually became available is not an unreasonable 'wish'.

I agree with you, definitely. Giving a date would be a professional manner.

However, in the world of Nokia and now Microsoft Mobile I am not aware of anyone you could ask for such a date. We have these Product Codes since the beginning of Nokia, back in the 90ies. They identify the firmware variant you have. Nokia had the policy to deliver the firmware when it is ready, and not when all variants get the same version. Therefore, some variants are early, some are late, and some do not get an update at all. Nokia did not accept the frustration created by this behaviour. We have to mention this in every thread again, and again. Competitors do this different. Until now, this habit was taken over to Microsoft Mobile and now Microsoft – therefore that ‘you bought a Nokia’ statement. I am just trying to explain the situation we have since the Nokia days. Until now, it did not make sense to chase up with anyone for anyone. It was just a waste of time.

My phone is

Model: Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE Dual SIM

Manufacturer Name: RM-1113_1002

Mobile Operator: 000-HK (Hong Kong Country Variant)

Product Code: 059X1B3

Current Software info:

Software: Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2

OS Version: 8.10.15127.138

Firmware revision number: 02166.00000.15103.05001

Hardware revision number: 2.1.7.2

Radio software version: 401.00129.0001

Chip SOC version: 8926

I have note yet received this update in this phone. http://www.microsoft.com/en/mobile/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/wp8-availability-in-asia-pacific/ lists China Country Variant of this phone as having the 02177.XXXXXX update while under Hong Kong none of the Lumia 640 variants are even listed. I am currently using this phone in USA with a AT&T Postpaid 4G/LTE SIM and would like to be able to use VoLTE (aka HD Voice).
