I am Sumit here to assist you with this question.
Edge is used by certain core components in the Operating system(for example widgets) so you cannot uninstall the same. If you do not use it, simply remove the desktop shortcut and forget it is installed. It does not run in the background on its own taking a large amount of resources.
Hope that helps.

It appears that they are. It is intended to collect information from their customers because selling data is really popular and lucrative.
I just happened upon this website because your post popped up in duckduckgo. These forums aren't any good because Microsoft ignores everything and we end up with these unqualified people that present an obvious language barrier. No offense to those folks but in no way are they qualified to be answering these questions as Summit was clearly wrong. Note that he said Edge does not work in the background. If you look in process details, it is running whether it is active or not. If it wasn't working in the background the system cannot be dependent on it.
I am reverting back to 10. I've been on 11 for 8 months so I will be hounded by microsoft to purchase a new license until 12 is released. Edge automatically opens every time I sign in to my PC.

Whilst you (Sumit) are correct that Microsoft Edge is utilized by several components of Windows 10/Windows 11, I beg to differ about it not running in the background. Widgets, for example, uses Microsoft Edge WebView2 which is separate from the core of Microsoft Edge and definitely runs in the background without basic user control. Thankfully, you can safely remove Widgets from Windows 11 if you wish and there are guides available to do so. It will leave Microsoft Edge installed but Widgets will be (almost) entirely removed. That includes the toggle and settings, taskbar icon, etc, although a few residue files might remain through the process. On my machine I have removed it because I have no use for it and therefore I don't need it on my system at all. Uninstalling Widgets more easily, as an optional feature module, is something Microsoft could work toward. I can always install it again through Microsoft Store if I change my mind and regardless it won't break Windows 11 or Microsoft Edge.
Removing Microsoft Edge on the other hand can lead to system instability as parts of Windows 10/Windows 11 rely on it to function. Whilst you can remove Microsoft Edge, it is a lot more work and I would not recommend you do so for previously stated reasons. Also, unlike Microsoft Edge Legacy (EdgeHTML-based) the new Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) is very good on Windows 10/Windows 11 with good standing on other platforms too. Simply unpin Microsoft Edge from the taskbar, ensure it doesn't start with Windows 10/Windows 11, nor stay running in the background, and then forget about it if you wish to use another browser. If you do use another, remember you won't be able to set the taskbar Search to your preferred search engine/browser without extensive modifications to Windows 10/Windows 11, all of which are not designed by Microsoft, and can put your system's stability and privacy at risk. You won't be able to get as deep integration with Windows either for say Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) as they don't have the same access Microsoft Edge does, neither were they designed to work deeper with Windows 10/Windows 11.
To conclude: You can safely remove Microsoft Edge WebView2 which, runs in the background, powering the 'Widgets' feature of Windows 11 but, whilst possible, it is not recommended to remove Microsoft Edge as it can cause more system issues that it's worth left dormant on your device.

First off, it does run in the background even though there isn't an open browser and I can prove it with a screenshot. Furthermore, I was successful in removing Chromium(edge) from the system. The only reason I never mentioned it and how to remove it is because I don't want Microsoft to know how I did it for obvious reasons. As for webview, I don't care about it since it doesn't affect anything other than the widgets you describe. I haven't used a widget since windows vista.
In the end, Microsoft tried to say that Windows is dependent upon a chromium web browser in order to function properly. That is simply not true. There are discussions regarding this in the insider section.

You can safely remove Microsoft Edge WebView2 which, runs in the background, powering the 'Widgets' feature of Windows 11
WebView2 has many more uses than just for 'powering' Widgets. It is the latest in a line of browser controls used by all manner of applications to display rich content. Some still use Internet Explorer's MSHTML and some Legacy Edge's EdgeHTML, but any new application and many updated old ones will use WebView2: The Most Exciting Part of Microsoft Edge is WebView2 | by Matthew MacDonald | Medium
If it's uninstalled, it will probably be replaced, and some applications will install its own copy if it's not present. Be prepared to see it come back if you do uninstall it.
