Tab Grouping feature in Microsoft Edge

Hi,

Tab grouping is a feature that used to exist back in the older versions of Internet Explorer and was removed later on.

It's now implemented in Google Chrome, although not as it used to be in IE.

I find this feature crucial for my productivity and the lack of it is a deal breaker. Does Edge offer a similar feature?

Hi, Shimmy! I'm Leonardo! An Independent Advisor and also a Microsoft user for several years. I'll be more than happy to assist you today!

Microsoft Edge allows having tab groups combining individual tabs into visually organized containers.

To Enable Tab Groups In Microsoft Edge:
1. Open Microsoft Edge Chromium.
2. Type the following text in the address bar: edge://flags/#tab-groups.
3. Select Enabled from the drop down list next to the Tab Groups option to enable this feature.
4. Restart the browser when prompted.

How to use Tab Groups:
1. Right-click a tab you want to add to a new group.
2. Select Add to new group from the context menu.
3. Right-click another tab, and select Add to existing group to group it with the previous tab.
4. Now, click on the Group indicator in the tab bar (the gray circle in my case). This will open a new dialog.
5. Specify the desired Tab Group name and its color if you want.
6. Also, you can ungroup the tabs, or close all the tabs in the group using that menu.

To Disable Tab Groups In Microsoft Edge:
1. Open Microsoft Edge Chromium.
2. Type the following text in the address bar: edge://flags/#tab-groups.
3. Select either Default or Disabled from the drop down list next to the Tab Groups option to enable this feature.
4. Restart the browser when prompted.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if that worked for you!

This is exactly my question.  In Chrome there is a way to enable this feature.  Toggling the group on and off.  IMHO it should be enabled without a flag.  What is the point of a group if you can't shrink it.  It takes up room in the bar so without the ability to shrink, they just take up real-estate.

Please either add this flag, like Chrome, or turn it on by default

My work just switched my computer over to Windows 10. Our proprietary software and server requires a Microsoft product to browse.

IE used to automatically group the tabs as they opened, and I could right-click to remove a tab from the group.

When closing multiple tabs, I didn't have to move my mouse at all. The tabs would stretch to reach the place the last 'x' occupied.

These were awesome time and effort saving features. Is there a way to enable this stuff in Edge?

I dont see the use of Grouping for me, unless I can shrink it or minimize the tab group within the window or something. Please advise.

Open a new tab and visit edge://flags/#tab-groups to try out the feature.

Hi folks,

Dropping in with an update that additional flags for tab groups (auto create, collapse, and collapse freezing) are in testing in our Microsoft Edge Insider channels. You can try out the new flags in our Beta channel today, or you can wait for the update to mature and move into the Stable build.

There was also a request for an equivalent to the set aside tabs feature from legacy Microsoft Edge. There is an active discussion on our sister community about ways to improve the tabs experience for users who have a significant number of tabs open, feel free to chime in there with what you'd like to see and how we can improve the experience: Discussion - Set Aside Tabs and Warn on Close - Microsoft Tech Community

If you have any questions, let me know!

You don't spell it out, but do I have it right that the progress from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge requires in this case a sign-up to a beta channel or at least discover of some otherwise hidden flags feature?

If that's what it is, then so be it, but wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft could find a little frankness and volunteer a slight sense apology in cases where the new software is a step back? I don't doubt that you mean to improve the new over time, but meanwhile you seem to presume your users should make some allowance when instead the least you can do in return is openly acknowledge that allowance or indulgence is needed. Play fair, please.

In the same Experimental features page, there is an option to 'Collabse Tab Groups' which you can Enable to shrink the tabs.
