Red Overlay on Microsoft Edge

I'm not sure what is happening- but everytime I open Microsoft Edge, a red overlay comes on my screen. I can see some parts of the page, but for the most part anytime I move my crusor over the page, it turns red- the pages won't load up and I can't see anything because its all red. I tried 'repairing' edge via the Apps setting on my laptop, and while it starts working- the minute I close the app- the red overlay shows up again. I'm at the point where I simply cannot close the Microsoft Edge application (I have to leave a tab open) so that I can continue using this. Does anyone know what could be causing this issue and how I can fix it?

NOTE: I am not having issues with any other app on my laptop- only Microsoft Edge.

Hi

Welcome to the Microsoft community.

Your problem may be caused by the edge browser hardware acceleration, you can follow the location in the following figure to close and click the green box restart option to restart the edge browser to see if the problem still exists?

You are welcome to reply to this topic at any time, and sincerely thank you for your support of Microsoft products and services.

Hi everyone,

I know this was posted quite a while ago, but this thread has gotten some views recently. Hence, I wanted to check in and see if you (or anyone landing on this thread via search) are still seeing this behavior on the latest version of Microsoft Edge.

Yes, still going on for me. All the notifications, including the extensions, are red (and pretty hard to read).

I would like to get the version number of your Microsoft Edge and a screenshot of the red issue.

  1. Click on the three dots menu button.

  2. Go to Help and feedback.

  3. Click on About Microsoft Edge to see the version number.

You can follow the steps on How to include a screenshot in your post - Microsoft Community.

I'm getting this issue with the latest Dev channel build (102.0.1227.0).

The stable version of Edge I have installed (100.0.1185.50) is unaffected.

Here's the expected appearance (as seen in the stable channel), for reference:

Additional notes:

  • The issue persists after a browser restart.

  • Disabling hardware acceleration does not appear to fix the issue.

  • The search box is not needed to reproduce the issue. The red extensions are visible the moment the browser opens.

  • I'm not getting any of the extreme behavior described in the OP, but @mbioswi's reply is accurate.

  • I can also reproduce the issue with my old MacBook (Dev channel).

If this is the wrong forum for insider-specific bug reports, feel free to point me in the right direction.

Microsoft Edge insider has its own forum at Microsoft Edge Insider - Microsoft Tech Community. The engineering team is aware of this on Dev and Canary, and they are investigating.
