New Microsoft Edge converted my files to HTML. Why and how to i fix it!!!!

I am so not a happy camper that Microsoft had the gall to change the type of my files.  Now I cannot use them.  They were .jpeg and/or Adobe files.  Now they are HTML and I don't know how to fix it.  I am so angry that Microsoft did this.  HOW DARE YOU CHANGE MY FILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do I fix this mess?

Hi Peggie

On Community, we are just users like yourself, volunteering to help, we are not Microsoft

Most likely what has happened is Edge has broken your file associations, those files will have Edge icons, but the underlying file has not changed . . .

Right click a jpeg file and choose Properties

On the resulting dialog, click the 'Change' button

Then, in the resulting list, find the application you prefer to open jpeg files with and choose that

Do the same for a PDF file and that should change the file association back to Adobe . . .

Thank you DaveM121 for your quick response.   I have discovered that not only did thy break my file associations they changed them to .SVG.  These are pieces I worked on that I would not save as SVG.  If anything, they would be a Photoshop file, or an Illustrator file.  This is just unacceptable that this happened.   Once I fix this mess can I disable Edge?

Hi Peggie

Microsoft have blocked Edge from being uninstalled, the best option is to reset all your files associations correctly, including your preferred web browser and just ignore Edge . . .

Hi Dave,

Thanks....so bloody annoying when this happens.  Can I ask one more question?  I used to be able to have the Windows Update notify me and then I had the choice if I wanted to update, or put it off.  I can't find that setting any more.  Did they take that away as well?

Thanks.

Hi Peggie

It depends on your current version of Windows, each version has different options . ..

Open the Settings App (gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Update and Security - Windows Updates

Do you see an 'Advanced Options' link, if so, click that and you should find those options there . . .

Hi Dave,

Thanks....Well, the sneaky little devils say I can "Pause" it for 35 days, then at that point I will have to update before I can pause for another 35 days....what BS is that.  I have Windows 10 Version 1903.  Right now I have updates paused for 7 days.

What would happen if I uninstalled that update?

Peggie

Hi Peggie

I don't think that will remove the Edge update . . .
