Have you tried changing the "Ask where to save each file" radio button to on? I guess that should do the trick.
Open Settings>Downloads and follow the GIF:

I have a dell with windows 10 and neither of these solutions seems to solve the problem. I can only save URLs of images, not the jpeg or png file. right clicking seems to only open an expanded view of the image, and any further clicking on the image just takes me to the web site. Any ideas?

Hi Kurt,

Have you tried changing the "Ask where to save each file" radio button to on? I guess that should do the trick.
Open Settings>Downloads and follow the GIF:
Why now in the same setting is written differently, now it says:
Ask me what to do with each download
Always ask me if I want to save a file or open it without saving
is this because of the new update? how can I make it always ask me to save as again like before?

this is the most annoying change in software since some time. after the update i was wondeering if the website broke or what because nothing happened at first sight, then i found the little dialog.
Can we plewase have the old setting back(save as after each download)?
pretty please, this is terrible. Now everytime i try to download anything it annoys me that i have to go to bottom left of screen to click yes i want to save it not open.
ugh.

I've attempted this setting and it doesn't work with our sharepoint files. It looks like it opens xls and doc files without asking. How can we force the user to download and choose where to save before opening? When I use the open file location option in the word or excel it opens up the website in the document library.

The user can elect to Always open files of this type by using the option in the ⋮ menu in the download shelf, after which these file types will be listed on the settings page (edge://settings/downloads) you saw earlier. You can configure a group policy to prevent SharePoint files of these types from being opened automatically:
Microsoft Edge Browser Policy Documentation | Microsoft Docs
