Microsoft edge on Android now opens copilot instead of voice websearch

Devs and users,

I'm running Edge 119.0.2151.65 on Android 13 (One UI 5.1 on Samsung Galaxy s23).

Edge will now open copilot when you perform a web search using the mic input button on either the new tab search landing page or the URL/search bar at the top of the browser.

I'm a longtime Edge user and appreciate the constant improvements. However, the recent changes to voice search have made it less convenient.

Copilot's integration into voice search feels redundant and disruptive to the standard search experience. As a frequent voice search user, I rely on the seamless process of simply pressing the microphone icon and speaking my search terms.

I suggest reconsidering Copilot's placement and exploring alternative solutions that maintain the intuitive nature of voice search while still providing easy access to Copilot's features. In other words, keep the Copilot button at the bottom of the browser and return the voice search's default functionality. I believe in Edge and think it's a great browser now that I've been using it, but I also believe the current Copilot integration detracts from the overall user experience on Android. I hope Microsoft will consider my feedback and roll back this change. Does anyone else feel the same?

I feel the exact same. It's intrusive and disruptive. I turned Copilot off in the settings because I don't want to use it, yet for some reason I am forced to with voice search. Since the quality and accuracy of gboard seems to be decreasing lately, voice search was my default method of input - now Microsoft has messed that up. Been an edge user from practically the beginning, but this might be the straw that forces me to start exploring other options.

I feel validated by this. Thank you! I use Copilot frequently, and it has immense value for complex search, but for simple search it is actually slower and reduces the quality of my experience. I was like, "are you serious?" when I first clicked the voice search mic and Copilot popped up.

I just want to use my voice to do basic web searches, just like you. I really hope we can draw some attention to this and make a meaningful difference.

I just want to take a moment to update this:

There is an option in the co-pilot settings that allows you to disable it when using voice search. I am not sure if the setting has been here this whole time or was retroactively added. I hope that this helps anybody else that is annoyed with the default settings!

That was definitely added retroactively. I think. I added that retroactively.
