Microsoft Edge Keeps Setting Itself as Default PDF Reader

Trust this email finds your members and you safe and healthy.

My default editor & reader is Nitro Pro 8. I have Adobe Reader also installed on my system. Microsoft Edge keeps setting itself as the default pdf reader & editor.

I read an article on the subject topic at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/edge-keeps-setting-itself-as-default-pdf-viewer/5098ee68-236b-4422-b66f-e14781b03264. The reply given by Mr Pedro applies to legacy Edge & not to the current version , 113.0.1774.57. Nobody else explained how to resolve this challenge.

How this challenge can be resolved?

Hi Raahul, I am Paulo and I'd like to help.

You can check Edge settings if it is set to open externally. Go to edge://settings/content/pdfDocuments and enable "Always download PDF files" then disable "PDF view settings"

Now, you may right-click on a PDF file > Properties > Change > More apps then select either Nitro Pro or Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

If it changes on every startup, is your device under a domain or from an organization?

Thanks for your kind reply. I checked the settings of Edge, as you suggested. It appears Microsoft has changed the settings in their latest version. There is no option edge://settings/content/. However, I searched for pdf in the settings' search bar. With much effort, I could reach the option "Always download PDF files" & turned it off as well as disabled "PDF view settings".

Currently, my default pdf editor is Nitro Pro 8. We will have to wait for Edge to attempt to set itself as the default pdf editor. Mostly, this happens whenever there is a Windows update.

I see. To clarify, you must enable the option "Always download PDF files" so Edge will not open the PDF but instead download it and use your default viewer. That's currently how I set it and I don't encounter the same problem. You're very welcome :)
