Microsoft Edge 16.1.2023 install

Opened my computer today (16.1.2023) and noticed that Microsoft Edge had made a shortcut icon of itself on my desktop. Checked the shortcut info and it didn't correlate with the info on the file location which I checked from several sources. Then again almost every single one of the sources told a different location for Edge. The target for the shortcut is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe". Does this correlate with the real location?

Another question: If it correlates with the real location, why did Edge install itself (checked the add/remove programs and it was installed)? Checked my Microsoft Update history and the only update that matches the date is a security update (KB2267602 version: 1.381.2277.0). Checked the contents of the security update and there was no mention of Edge. I neither see any reason why Edge would install itself through a security update.

Ran a quick scan just for fun. No infection.

Hi IiroWasen,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe is the location of the Edge Browser executable, that is correct.

That extra Edge icon on the Desktop was created by an Edge update, which will not appear in Windows updates, because Edge updates itself automatically using its own process.

Rest assured there is nothing wrong with your system, you can delete that Edge icon if you do not need it.
