Issues with Netflix 4K in Edge

I have recently discovered that I no longer see 4K content on Netflix in Edge. All content is restricted to HD.

I have Edge Version 100.0.1185.39 and HEVC 1.0.50361.0 installed.

When I type in edge://gpu, I found that HDCP 2.2 and HEVC 4K was not enabled. However, the funny thing is that I can see 4K content in the Netflix Windows app but just not in the Edge browser. I think some recent update broke this.

However, Intel Graphics Command Center tells a different story

Hi Kell_hound,

Thanks for your post in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you have encountered the problem that edge cannot play Netflix 4K video.

Netflix 4K video playback requires the hardware acceleration function of edge to be turned on.

Settings - System and Performance - Use Hardware Acceleration

Then enter edge://flags in the URL bar and open,

Find PlayReady DRM for Windows 10 and select Enable.

Restart edge to see if it works.

If you still can't view 4K video after turning on hardware acceleration and PlayReady DRM for Windows 10, it is recommended to provide feedback in edge.

Options - Help and Feedback - Send Feedback

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.

I have checked the 2 items you mentioned and they are both enabled. I am still restricted to only HD content in Netflix using Edge.

There may be compatibility issues currently. There is currently no better solution to this problem. You may need to use a client for a while to watch 4K video. These issues may be fixed in subsequent releases.

Thank you very much for your understanding.

I have found that it's the video driver updates that Microsoft is pushing out through Windows Updates that's breaking the Netflix 4K playback functionality in Edge. Please fix this!!!

May I know if Microsoft is working on a fix on this? I've seen that others have had the same issue since July 2021 https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/netflix-4k-on-edge-no-longer-available/433cdbaa-2382-4a6f-b1db-d3cfbce7b877

Intel customer support replied (as I'm using Intel NUC computers) that they were able to replicate the issue and found that they could only play HD but not 4K using our Intel NUCs and other 3rd party devices. Considering this situation, they advised that it would be best to contact Microsoft to check if they have a fix to this issue since both our devices have the same behavior.

Subscribing to this post as this issue is impacting me as well. Netflix streams fine in 4K with Chrome but not Edge unless Hardware Acceleration is disabled.

Hi, are you sure you have Netflix streaming in 4K in Chrome? Netflix does not support 4K in Chrome and is limited to 1080p. This is by design

Great point! It must not be - it's just nice that the video plays at all without having to disable hardware acceleration or bumping my laptop display down to 1080p. :)
