Intermittent Google News Article video Pop Up Problem

See also my reply below when I discovered it is intermittent.

This seems to apply to local news stations...

This is not an ad problem.

A few months ago, I asked this question and got the advice you see below on Google and MS help. I followed the directions, but they don't work.

I tried asking a question and the resulting answers never work unless I resort to bothering you (see below)

I click on a local or national news article with a news video at the top of the screen.

Obviously I wanted to read it, not watch it so I scroll down to read and the video pops up in the lower right corner and begins distracting and flickering to get my attention. The news video, not an ad.

Many (though not this time) the X to shut it off, eliminate it, is not very easy to find.

Is there a way to solve this problem pop up without resorting to buying an untrusted software or having to block each and every single news page I click on?

Thank You

Hello, Jet_Gardner.

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I have some ideas.

I visited the website you shared and did not encounter the problem you are experiencing.

My Edge version is 123.0.2420.81.

Also, regarding the video in the lower right corner, it looks a bit like Edge's picture-in-picture mode.

Please try to turn off the picture-in-picture mode.

Open Edge settings -> Cookies and site permissions -> Picture-in-picture controls -> Turn off -> Restart the Edge browser to test.

If that doesn't work, please try resetting the Edge settings.

(Before resetting, please back up important data from Edge.)

Open Edge settings -> Reset settings

Additionally, you could also try other browsers to see if the same situation occurs.

(Chrome or Firefox)

The test results will help determine where the problem lies.

If there are any updates, please feel free to reply.

Best regards.

A strange thing has happened.

If I click the link below, from this page, the problem doesn't occur???

Lake Mead rock formations destroyed by 2 men (wmur.com)

If I click the link below, scroll down to the article link at Google news page it does???

Google news

Google News - U.S. - Latest

I click, scroll below the player at the top of the page, and the nuisance player shows up, has no obvious way of closing it, and has plagued me for years/months with my current desktop PC

I am using.

Microsoft EdgeVersion 122.0.2365.80 (Official build) (64-bit)

Image

I am not going to disable picture in picture because I use it constantly to watch youtubes while working on other projects.

I'm housebound due to injuries and rely on my desktop pc as cumminications with the outside world.

I need someone who has the problem and knows how to fix it...

Thank you for your efforts tho

Hello, Jet_Gardner.

Thanks for your reply.

I followed the instructions and did not encounter the issue you are experiencing on my machine.

Please try creating a new Edge account (click the three dots on Edge -> Settings -> Profiles -> Add a profile) or reset the browser.

(Click the three dots on Edge -> Settings -> Reset Settings)

Disclaimer: Please back up important browser data before resetting.

(For example, bookmarks.)

And test with another browser.

Testing results will help identify the possible cause.

If there are any updates, please feel free to reply.

Best regards.

I've shown you 2 different instances of the problem in screen print.

You obviously have some sort of software or setting that is blocking the problem that I don't have.

The problem exists.

There apparently are thousands or more on line with the same problem.

It is not a virus as my detection is up to date

If you can't reproduce the problem, you can't help me fix it... please find someone who can.

I've changed reconditioned computers twice in the last 3 years, all displayed this in both win10 and 11.

During that process, i lost all my settings and saved tweaks.

I am not going to go through that again for someone who can't reproduce the problem.

Here is another example.

Hello, Jet_Gardner.

Thanks for your reply.

Please try using another browser.

(Chrome and firefox)

I don't intend to make you switch browsers; this is simply for testing purposes.

(The issue with Picture-in-Picture mode has been ruled out, as the PiP window doesn't look like that.)

If you are unable to download and install a browser, I suggest you contact someone who can help you operate the computer.

I am focusing on having you test other browsers in order to eliminate any issues with browser extensions or the website itself.

I have some experience in website development, and developers can configure a website to display a certain window and then play a video.

(Website developers can choose the placement, so if the developer thinks the bottom right corner is unsightly, they can set it to appear by default in the middle or the top left corner.)

If there are any updates, please feel free to reply.

Best regards.

Hello, Jet_Gardner.

For the second example, the presence of the window in the environment I tested also proves that this is evidence of the website's own design.

(The test environment did not log into any accounts, did not change any settings, and did not use any extensions.)

(This is not picture-in-picture either, because the style of Edge's built-in picture-in-picture is not like this. The window still appears after closing the picture-in-picture.)

(The website you visited runs slowly on my test machine, and even web page freezing occurred.)

If there are any updates, please feel free to reply.

Best regards.

Hello, Jet_Gardner.

I'm not sure about your access situation, but my slow access and browser freeze also show that the website developer has added a lot of features.

If there are any updates, please feel free to reply.

Best regards.

This problem has persisted through 4 different desktops, and browsers, ad blockers and anti-viruses for over 10+ years

Below is any info on my PC.

Image

I'm not sure which website developer you are referring to. I have trouble with multiple sites all different. I click on 20-30 news articles a day because I'm housebound due to injuries and want to keep in touch with the outside world.

Apparently thousands of others if a Google search is any indication have this problem as well, but no one at this site seems to be able to duplicate the problem???

Could the staff here have blockers on their PC that us common people don't have.

If I click on a news site that has a video running, and scroll down to read the article, the video follows down the right sidebar. Sometimes with no obvious way of shutting if off or pausing it. I would rather read my news that watch a video.

Some sites offer a solution, but of course you have to pay for it.

Here are 4 examples from today.

Update...

Additional to my my most recent on the 20th of April, please try this, as your people seem to have problems duplicating the problem from here.

Go to

Google News - U.S. - Latest

then click on any news stories from local news or NBC or ABC, but do it from that link's stories, as it doesn't seem to work from here...

You may have to try a few, you're looking for a story that has a video > before < the article.

Wait for the video to start playing.

Scroll down to the printed version of the story and see if the video doesn't blink down to the lower right corner and start playing whether you want it to or not.
