How can I stop Microsoft Edge from opening tabs for Microsoft advertisements?

New computer running Windows 11 Home for about a month now.

Whenever I use Microsoft Edge it opens new tabs against my will which are all advertisements for Microsoft products. It happens probably about once ever 20 minutes or at least once an hour. It is infuriating. Honest to God, it's so bad it functions essentially the same as a Malware virus, but I know it's not because it's 100% related to Microsoft marketing. How can I stop Microsoft from bombarding me with new tab advertisements when I'm browsing?

Hi, Kevin Kelly14

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

We understand that you are experiencing a problem with ads popping up when you open the Edge browser, and we suggest you try the following options:

Click Start and select Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics and Feedback.

Turn off all the options there.

Next, open Edge:

1. Choose Settings & More > Settings > Privacy, Search & Services.

2. Under "Personalization & Ads", turn off the "Allow Microsoft" setting.

Under "Start, home, and new tabs", set the initial page Edge starts on to a blank page, or https://bing.com/

Sincerely

Hello Nicholas,

I had already turned off that setting in hopes it was the answer. It's not. Microsoft is still opening its own tabs with advertisements for Microsoft products and features.

Nicholas,

Here is the most recent unwanted Microsoft new tab advertisement. Link & screenshot. Sometimes it's articles like this one, sometimes its offers to buy a Microsoft product of some sort.

Hi, Kevin Kelly14

Thank you for your reply!

Are these ads popping up automatically when you open Edge or have you clicked on any links or images?

If you are already logged in to your account on Edge, you can try logging out or creating a new profile in the upper left corner.

or you can try logging in to this link:

https://account.microsoft.com/privacy/ad-settings

Turn off the "See ads you're interested in" setting

Hi Nicholas,

I am not clicking on anything. In fact, it usually happens when I've been using the computer and walk away for a bit. I'll come back to the computer and Edge has opened a new tab in Edge with an advertisement for something related to Microsoft.
