Edge scaling documents up to 125% by default????

Does anyone know how to stop Edge from scaling every PDF I go to print up to 125%?

This somehow changed over the weekend and I can't figure out how to change it back.

Every time I go to print a PDF it is defaulted to "fit to page" which for some reason makes it 125%, meaning it doesn't fit on the page. I just want it to go back to normal and print one normal page on one normal page by default.

My job involves printing a lot of invoices, service reports, etc. that come by email as PDFs. I would just use another browser, but Edge is the default for PDFs and I can't change the default apps as it's a company machine.

Having to right click - open with every time, or having to change this setting back to 100% every single time is ridiculous and I have no clue how it got the way it is in the first place, it was working normally last week.

Can anyone help me, please?

Hi

Welcome to Microsoft community.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue with Microsoft Edge's default printing scaling settings for PDF documents, which can indeed be frustrating, especially when consistency in document layout is crucial for your work. Here's a step-by-step guide to potentially resolve this issue:

  1. Check Edge's Print Settings:

    • When you open a PDF in Edge and press Ctrl + P to print, a print preview window appears. In this window, check if the "Scale" option is set to "Custom" or "Fit to Page". If it's set to "Fit to Page", it might automatically scale to 125%. Try selecting "Actual Size" from the dropdown menu to ensure it prints at 100%.

  2. Reset Edge Settings:

    • If the issue persists, try resetting Edge's settings. Go to Edge's settings (... > “Settings”), then select "Reset settings" on the left sidebar. Choose "Restore settings to their default values". This won't delete your bookmarks, but it will reset your startup page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs. It may also resolve any odd scaling defaults.

  3. Update Edge:

    • Ensure your Edge browser is up to date, as this could be a bug that has been fixed in a newer version. Go to ... > “Help and feedback” > “About Microsoft Edge” to check for updates.

  4. Change Default PDF Viewer:

    • Although you mentioned you can't change the default apps on your company machine, it might be worth discussing this issue with your IT department. They could potentially change the default PDF viewer to Adobe Reader or another PDF viewer that doesn't automatically scale your documents in an undesirable way.

  5. Use Another PDF Viewer for Printing:

    • As a workaround, you can download the PDFs and open them with another program like Adobe Reader for printing. While this isn't the most convenient solution, especially if you're dealing with a large volume of documents, it might be a temporary fix until the issue with Edge can be resolved.

  6. Contact IT Support:

    • Since it's a company machine, there might be policies or updates pushed that changed how Edge handles PDFs. Contacting your IT department could provide a more tailored solution to your problem, especially if this is happening across multiple machines in your organization.

These steps are meant to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with Edge's default print scaling. If the problem persists, seeking assistance from your company's IT department might be the best course of action, as they may have more control over the software configurations and updates on company machines.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.

Best regards

Hello,

I was actually able to get the default changed, but I did want to mention that before I went to IT since I hadn't heard back here yet, I did try to reset settings in Edge.

Resetting the settings didn't change anything, it was still defaulted to "fit to page" and 125%.

I would point out that there is no way this is the intended behavior, Edge should absolutely be defaulting to print one normal 8 1/2 x 11 PDF on one normal 8/12 x 11 sheet of paper. So this appears to definitively be a bug, that should probably get submitted somewhere else.

I'll leave that up to the support team here to figure out how to report that. Turning off notifications on this since I've solved the problem for me, but it does seem like the Edge team should want this fixed.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to resolve the issue by changing the default setting, even though resetting Edge's settings didn't correct the problem. It's unfortunate that the "Fit to Page" option was causing such a hassle by defaulting to 125% scaling. Your experience does indeed sound like it could be an issue or an unintended default behavior in the Microsoft Edge browser when dealing with PDF printing.

Given your experience, it's clear that this issue could affect other users as well, especially those who rely on Edge for handling PDF documents frequently in a professional setting. Reporting this to the Microsoft Edge development team could help them identify and correct this issue in future updates.

Here's how you or your IT department can report this issue to Microsoft:

Through Edge Feedback: The most direct way to report issues is through Edge itself. You can do this by going to ... (Settings and more) > Help and feedback > Send feedback. Provide a detailed description of the issue, mentioning the unexpected scaling to 125% by default when printing PDFs. You can also include diagnostic data and screenshots.

By reporting this, you not only help improve Microsoft Edge for your own use but also assist others who might be facing the same issue and are looking for a solution. The Edge development team relies on user feedback to identify and fix problems, so your input is valuable.

Thank you for sharing your situation, and hopefully, this issue will be addressed in future updates of Microsoft Edge.

I have the same issue and it just started overnight. I printed PDF files yesterday just fine. Today, they are scaling to fit to page at 125%. I tried resetting the Edge settings but that did not solve the problem.

again, this just started today so something in Edge is messed up.

We had the same issue start happening on 4/23 for our users using the Edge browser.

Fit to Page is the default in Print Preview but Edge is not scaling the document properly based on that default.

If you select Actual Size and then select Fit to Page again, then it actually scales the document to Fit to Page as expected.

There is definitely a bug that needs fixed here.

Note:

The Chome browser doesn't have this issue.

I too have had this issue as of the end of last month. However, Edge on my work computers auto sets the scaling to 40%. Very annoying as I do a lot of printing from PDF's in the browser and this prevents me from using key shortcuts. I will follow the error report as outlined here.
