Chromium based apps have a blank screen issue

For a couple of months now all chromium based apps on my PC have been basically unusable.

Chrome was my main browser. It displays as a completely white screen.

I got it working again by running it in compatibility mode, however it is far from satisfying.

So I am currently using Firefox

I don't care about using Edge, however Microsoft won't stop opening links in Edge, even though I set a different default browser.

Edge is transparent and borders are flickering, no UI visible, sometimes the task bar starts glitching too.

Steam has been working until recently, now everything except the UI is black.

I think I once messed something up in my system, maybe deleting something I shouldn't have.

Is there a practical way to get it to work again, preferably something that doesn't involve a complete fresh start?

Hi crispr_boi,
I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

It looks like this is being caused by the video driver.

What is the manufacturer and model of the computer?
If you have a dedicated video card. What is the manufacturer and model?

Thank you for your help David.

Really? Everything else seems to be working fine though..

My PC is a custom build.

So that would be a long answer. If you could specify what parts you mean specifically?

My graphics card is: MSI GeForce RTX 2070S GAMING X TRIO.

I regularly update my Nvidia Drivers (using studio drivers)

I prefer to use Game Ready drivers.

Download the latest driver from the Nvidia website. Then, use the free DDU tool to remove the current driver. Then install the driver you downloaded and see if it works correctly.

Ok, let's do a test on Edge.

Disable hardware acceleration:
1. Select "Settings and more (Alt + F) > Settings";
2. On the left panel, select "System and performance";
3. Disable "Use hardware acceleration when available';
4. Restart the browser and test.
See if, with this option disabled, the problem will occur.

Sorry, correction:

Edge seemed to be normal today in general, for the first time in months it actually displayed anything, but only when opening Edge, when Windows opens a link in Edge the window still is completely blank, no UI no text, nothing. But when trying to click on "Settings and more" or pressing Alt+F nothing happens.

Other things seem to function normally, but when I press certain things in the UI the window turn black, and sometimes the task bar starts glitching as well.

The colors in the browser have a weird brownish tint to them, Chrome did so too, when it was set to compatibility mode. When turning that off, it is back to being completely unusable.

But as I said I don't really need Edge, I am more interested in solving the root cause, so I can use Steam and maybe also Chrome like I used to again.

Thanks for the clarification.

Perform a clean boot to see if any third-party program in the background is causing this problem. Follow the instructions carefully.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-t...
If the problem does not occur after a clean boot. In this same article, there is a technique to help you identify which program is causing this in "How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot".

After finding the cause or if it does not help, return to normal boot as instructed in "Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting".

Sorry, I was intimidated by the task, and now that I finally did it I realized it was not as difficult as expected.

However in the clean boot environment the issues persisted..

I am not sure what the next step would be?

A clean new windows install?

I understand. The Clean Boot procedure looks complicated when first seen. After doing it, you realize that it's not that complicated. It just requires attention to what you're doing.

Create a local user with administrator privileges. Then log out of the current user, log into the new user and see if the same behavior occurs.
Create a local user or administrator account in Windows

Let me know the result.
