I am trying to align monospaced fonts vertically, but it appears that the space characters are narrower in width than the non-space characters. This causes vertical misalignment in Document 2 (lines 1 and 2 are shorter than lines 3 and 4). Is there a way to ensure that the space and non-space characters are the same width?
I have tried to solve the problem in a number of ways (detailed below) with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.
Document 1 (no problem):
Document 2 (misalignment):
I have checked the following after reading through similar issues online:
- Double checked that in both documents, I am using Consolas 9 point font, aligned to the left
- Character spacing is normal (not expanded or condensed - see screenshot below).
- Print - Save as PDF does not solve the alignment issue, so I assume it's not a problem caused by "optimize character positioning for layout rather than readability" setting. (If it displays incorrectly but prints correctly, there is an option that might make a difference: Office Button | Word Options | Advanced | Display: Optimize character positioning for layout rather than readability. From this thread)
- Aligning center, then aligning left again does not solve the issue.
- Selecting Tools -> Language, and making sure that the language is English does not solve the issue.
I use Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac, version 14.4.7 on OS X Yosemite 10.10.1
