Outlook 2011 crashes every time I open rules.

Outlook 2011 crashes every time I open rules.  I've tried deleting outlook preferences but the problem persists.  Office 2011 14.1.4 installed on an OSX 10.6.8 Intel MBP.    Here's the MS code:
"Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0  Error Signature: Exception: EXC_CRASH (SIGTRAP) Date/Time: 2012-03-13 15:26:54 -0700 Application Name: Microsoft Outlook Application Bundle ID: com.microsoft.Outlook Application Signature: OPIM Application Version: 14.1.4.111121 Crashed Module Name: merp Crashed Module Version: 2.2.4.111121 Crashed Module Offset: 0x00003b5a Blame Module Name: OutlookCore Blame Module Version: 14.1.4.111121 Blame Module Offset: 0x0021fe76 Application LCID: 1033 Extra app info: Reg=en Loc=0x0409  Crashed thread: 8"

How can I fix?   Thanks

Crashed Module Name: merp Crashed Module Version: 2.2.4.111121

This should be version 2.2.8. You can download the updater here:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=28734

However, I don't understand how opening rules is a result of the MERP being out of date. If the updater fails to fix, try testing Outlook in a new Identity (no need to setup acounts) and see if clicking on Rules causing the same behavior.

If yes, Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

if no, you might try rebuilding your Outlook Identity.

Rebuild Basics:

  • Do Not Rebuild Identities with Exchange and IMAP accounts. Delete the accounts (this deletes the cache files in Outlook). Do the rebuild then add back accounts. Better yet start over in a new Identity. If the rebuild does not work then you could sync unwanted changes or deletions to your server and lose data.
  • Make sure you have plenty of free space on your drive. Make sure that you have at least three times as much hard disk space available as the current size of your Outlook identity PLUS 10% free for virtual memory.
  • Rebuilding does not fix all issues. It can make some problems worse. Even though the Database Utility will make a backup, I advise making a copy in the Finder first.
  • You can delete the rebuild version after you are satisfied with the results. This copy will be named like this: Main Identity [Backed up 1-21-2012 13.35]

I clicked on me too, and my particular problem appears to have been caused by corrupt rules on the server. These were created using a very old version of outlook for Mac, and once deleted via a Windows box stopped the new version from crashing when accessing the rules.
