Build 14986 - Error Code 80240031

***Edit:  2016.12.08 - 4:00pm PST***

There has been a great deal of research done on this.  As usual, Insiders have done some creative workarounds while trying to get past the error!  Good news:  the workaround is simple.  Run this troubleshooter!

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

This tool performs a number of actions which will get you back to a clean update state.  You will need an active internet connection to download this tool and to re-download build 14986 as needed.  Once the tool has completed, return to the Settings panel and re-scan for updates.  14986 should download as expected.

**NOTE**  In this thread and on a few websites, there have been recommendations to edit your registry and set two regkeys to zero.  While this may have helped for this particular build, it is important that you restore these regkeys back to their original value if you changed them.  This will impact your ability to receive future updates.  If you did not make any registry edits, no changes are required and you may skip this note.

Hello Insiders!

We released build 14986 today to the Fast ring and know you're excited to install and check it out.  It seems that some users are hitting an error code while the build is attempting to download:  80244031.

If you're hitting this while trying to install this new build, please share the following details:

  • Which language/country version are you using?  (Example:  EN-US for English/United States)
  • Which edition of Windows10 do you have installed?  Home/Pro/Enterprise
  • Is your machine x86 or x64?
  • If you restart your computer, does it display the same error again?

Should you have any additional details that would be helpful in our investigation, please share!

Thank you as always,
Jason

Same error after restart, Updating from 14971.

I had the same error as others. I tried rebooting and using Windows Update Troubleshooter, but still got the error each time I did the Retry. This was all on an a US-EN language, x64 computer with Windows 10 Home edition and build 14971 installed.

Then I went to the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and saw it had 4 folders with today's date (3 of which were empty). I deleted all 4 folders, which required Admin approval. I then did the Retry on the download update and the download started. It stayed on 0% download for about 10 minutes and finally finished downloading in about 25 minutes.

So I have build 14986 installed.

  • Which language/country version are you using? (Example: EN-US for English/United States)
  • Which edition of Windows10 do you have installed?  Pro
  • Is your machine x86 or x64? 64
  • If you restart your computer, does it display the same error again? Yes and the same on my laptop with exact same specs

EN-US

Pro

x64

Every time I restart, I get the same error message.

I've tried the steps Jeffprocter used, but I can never get past the 0% downloaded message. I can't leave the system alone for very long to let it download the update because the "downloading" screen stays up for only a few seconds. It switches to the error screen with the "Retry" button after no more than 15 seconds. Every time.

I edited the registry values below as suggested here (https://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/72329-DISCUSSION-Windows-10-Insider-Preview-Build-14986-(PC)?p=1299095&viewfull=1#post1299095) and the installation is going fine.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate]
"SupportsUUP"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Orchestrator]
"EnableUUPScan"=dword:00000000

None of suggestions help. English X64 box.

  • If you restart your computer, does it display the same error again? Yes

Tried the windows updater repair tool, didn't work.

Tried to "reset my PC", that didn't work.

Tried to delete everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download --while that did work for a few mins, then, it stated the same 0x80240031 error yet again.

So, can't get the update. :(

From 14971,

EN:US But I also use ENG:CAFR, installed

Windows 10 Pro X64

Reboot didn't fix anything.

After reading much of this forum before attempting the update (from 971 Pro, x64, EN-US), I first ran Disk Cleanup (including System files), then ran Windows Update Troubleshooter (Admin. mode) from Control Panel, fixed 4 issues automatically, restarted, Checked for Updates.  After sitting at 0% for some time, the update downloaded without error, and now after restart is installing without any errors (so far).  I don't know if any of these steps were necessary, but the method may work for others.

I edited the registry values below as suggested here (https://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/72329-DISCUSSION-Windows-10-Insider-Preview-Build-14986-(PC)?p=1299095&viewfull=1#post1299095) and the installation is going fine.

"SupportsUUP"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Orchestrator]
"EnableUUPScan"=dword:00000000

This resolved my issue, and it is now installing.
