Hi Michael,

You could face this issue due to wrong power settings or if the Battery driver is corrupt. Please write to us with the following detail.

1) What is make and model of your computer?

2) Did you make any changes to the Power options in your computer prior to this issue?

Try to remove the battery from the back of your laptop and then reinsert it. When your laptop battery is dead or when your laptop power supply does not provide right power, this can happen. Please consider replacing the battery or the power adapter for your laptop. I suggest you to follow the steps given below and check if it helps.

Method 1: Run Power Troubleshooter.

Follow these steps to run power troubleshooter.

  1. Press Windows key + W and type troubleshooting.

  2. Select Troubleshooting.

  3. Select view all on the top left corner.

  4. Run Power troubleshooter.

Check for the issue and move to the next methods if it still exists

Method 2: Uninstall and reinstall the Battery Drivers.

Follow the steps given below to uninstall and reinstall the battery driver.

  1. Press Windows Key + X Key, Click on Device Manager.

  2. Expand Microsoft AC batteries.

  3. Right Click and select Uninstall.

  4. Restart your computer.

Check the issue and get back to us with the status of the issue. We will assist you further.

I'm having the same issue on my HP Envy 17 J-021nr. I've tried all the suggested fixes with no luck. I can shut my laptop down and it charges just fine.

I had problems with my HP test laptop, would run on mains power ok but not charge.  After some searching I found an answer on an HP forum (and it appears applies to multiple O/S).

The answer that worked for me was to uninstall all the ACPI drivers, power down the laptop, remove the power lead and battery, leave it a couple of minutes, plug in the power (leave battery out), boot system, shut down system, put battery back in then boot as normal.

I'll give this a try, but this never happened before build 9926, and it appears others are having the same issue. I forgot to mention my wife's Acer Aspire 7741z is also doing the exact same thing.
