20H2 Will Be Windows 10 Version 2009, a Minor Update for 20H1

A cumulative update released for Windows 10 version 2004, '20H1', also known as 'May 2020 Update', reveals new information regarding Windows 10 '20H2'. It confirms rumors that 20H2 will be a minor, service pack-like update. It will follow the idea that Microsoft has implemented for Windows 10 version 1909, which is a minor update to version 1903.

The latest cumulative update for Windows 10 Version 2004, build 19041.264, contains early hints on how the 20H2 update will work. If a package called Microsoft-Windows-20H2Enablement is present while installing that patch, you will end up with Windows 10 version 2009, Build 19042, after updating the OS.  KB4556803 is applicable to both Windows 10 2004 (19041) and Windows 10 2009 (19042).

Very interesting. If this is accurate, that keeps me on Fast Ring builds as my primary OS for the rest of this year.

My data volume (ReFS-formatted, Storage Spaces Storage Pool) cannot be read by Version 2004 of Windows 10 because Fast Ring uses a higher version of ReFS. So unless I backup and restore all of my data volume, I am stuck with Fast Ring builds.

Hi Don,

As Fast ring builds features may or may not get into release, perhaps MS might use the higher version ReFS on the 20H2 build. As this is all mainly speculation, I can see MS following same pattern of 18362/3. Would simplify things for vendors and customers with one major update per year. Only MS knows for sure, time will tell.

If they do enable 20H2 to read the new ReFS version, I could easily do a clean-install to downgrade to the lower build number.

Microsoft has never said that the Fast Ring builds from rs_prerelease and mn_release branches are aligned to any future public build. In fact, they have stated that they "are not matched to a specific Windows 10 release".  MN is the chemical symbol for Manganese, which is what people believe is the next public release code name.

Components from both branches could end up in the next public release, or perhaps not until some future Version of Windows 10. If the Enablement package does get used, as they did between Version 1903 and 1909, any new features would have to be enabled by a CU only, rather than requiring a new major build number.

People in the tech industry love to speculate about Microsoft plans. Until something is announced, it is not an official Microsoft statement. Even the fact that this Microsoft-Windows-20H2Enablement package has been planned does not guarantee that they will follow through with this approach.

Right click Start, Run and type winver for the

build #.

Insiders need to stop using the 20H2 or other #'s

like the version #.

A build # tells us where you are at.

20H2 has been available for those in the Beta Channel (Slow Ring) since June 16th. It has not been released as a consumer release. This would be build 19042.330
