18237 Error 0x8007000e: RAM useage

Update: "When we released 19H1 Build 18237 earlier today, we unintentionally released as encrypted. This wasn’t supposed to go out with an external flight. We have begun re-publishing Build 18237 as unencrypted. We are continuing to investigate reports of high memory usage and will monitor to see if the re-published build resolves these issues." - Twitter

Hi William,

I assume that you're only interested in RAM usage during the install? I can set at least a machine lower bound of 16GB, as I did not have that error.

For this particular thread, yes. Feel free to make another thread or use the 18237 thread for other issues.

If you set a VM to 4-8 GB and tested the update, that would certainly be helpful. The insiders with more RAM seem to be able to power through it, but 4-8 GB insiders are getting the error of system out of memory.

@rseiler, I saw your post in the other thread, thanks. It's been shared with the engineers.

All is actually fine on my machine, so no need for that (Although it would make a change |--)

About the VM, I would if I could but don't use VM. I'm sure somebody will test it.

Yes almost all of16GB of RAM is used up when download hits 100%. almost seems like it's not writing to disk but RAM instead. I can see it in Task manager how it steadily fills up RAM and no disk activity.

Hello,

I think (well, almost sure) that the cause of these problems are corrupted cabs. You can check this in "%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download" (Try opening some random cabs, it will fail (No MSCF header)). These corrupted cabs are not caused by the download itself but they are corrupted from Microsoft servers.

Or, they are encrypted, still these problems are from Windows Update server side.

Wait until Microsoft fixes this :)

Well, these cabs are encrypted (keys are sent from the server), they are just slow and heavy (very very ram heavy).

Maybe WU fails because it runs out of memory during the decryption, who knows.
